This position is an identified position in which the duties involve extensive engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Traditional Owners, Indigenous communities, or their representatives.

About the Role

The purpose of this position is to deliver the Junior Ranger program at the two Destinations. This program has been made possible through a National Indigenous Australians Agency grant.

The outcomes of this program are:

  • Increased First Nations attainment of Year 12 or equivalent qualifications.
  • First Nations youth successfully transition to further education and/or employment.
  • Provision of culturally relevant school-based learning.
  • Increased school attendance rates.
  • Improved literacy and numeracy.
  • Development of industry appropriate skills for employment.
  • Intergenerational transmission of First Nations knowledge and customary practice
  • Robust partnerships between local schools, First Nations organisations, Traditional Owners, and/or local Elders, and Indigenous ranger groups (where relevant)

This position will work in partnership with Trust for Nature and the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation to develop and deliver activities to First Nations secondary and/or primary students at the Briars and Police Point to that promote a deep connection for First Nations school children and their families to Bunurong Country. This program will provide an entry point into the tertiary Warreen Beek Cultural Rangers program.

About You

  • You will have a strong understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people peoples in a social, cultural, community and political environment, and how that may shape engagement processes.
  • You understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s spiritual connection to country their Cultural Authority, Traditional Lores, Customs and Values for managing Country.
  • You have experience in Traditional Owner engagement, with a strong track record of fostering collaborative partnerships that bring benefits and outcomes for both Traditional Owners and Aboriginal youth.
  • You are an excellent communicator, in the written and verbal forms across internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Your communication skills often lead to strengthening relationships
