Organic Market Gardening Internship (Voluntary)

This internship opportunity is aimed at participants wanting to get involved in small-scale organic market gardening, potentially to go on and work in the industry or start your own market garden.

Two positions are available, however there is the possibility of extra positions with other small organic farms in the area joining the program.

The internship would look like this:

  • 3 month internship starting September 23rd - 20th December.
  • Three 8 hour days per week - Payment of $500 per fortnight as a stipend.
  • Working side by side with experienced growers taking you through the many varied tasks of the position.
  • Successful applicants can choose to complete there internship at one of two host farms situated in the Dandenong/ Yarra ranges east of Melbourne.
  • These farms include Muddy Creek Gardens in Belgrave south and Silvertine Farm in Yarra junction.

About Muddy Creek Gardens:

Our Farm is located in Belgrave at the foothills of the Dandenong ranges 45 mins east of Melbourne. we operate using organic practises on 1.5 acres of land, growing 30-50 varieties of vegetables and fruits seasonally. We sell our produce direct at farmers markets, local shops/ restaurants and a small amount to wholesalers.

About Silvertine Farm:

Our Farm is managed by Tobias Mager and Josh Tucker. we farm on less than 2 acres over two sites. Our main site is at Yarra Valley Ecoss. we grow a wide variety of veggies which we sell direct to customers at the farmers market.

Interns would complete their training on their host farm which will tackle each aspect of running the farm.

  • soil health and amendments
  • planting, cultivating and weeding
  • Pest and disease management for organic farming
  • marketing and selling your produce
  • accessing land and becoming farm ready

Be exposed to a vibrant community spirit and a network of like minded passionate farmers that support each other on their farming journeys.

This is the pilot program of this internship opportunity, with the view to expand to a wider web of small scale organic farms in the Melbourne region, upon review.

Key selection criteria:

  • a passion for small scale organic farming
  • an aspiration to pursue a career in this field
  • ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions
  • a willingness to engage and learn the various skills of market gardening
  • the ability to work well in a fast paced team environment
  • a vehicle and license is preferred though not essential.
