The opportunity

The Nucleic acid Extraction and Sequencing Technologies unit within Victorian Clinical Genetic Services (VCGS) is the key laboratory team tasked with the development and delivery of sequencing related assays, including Sanger sequencing and genomic-scale Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). The service is NATA accredited, has a strong commercial focus and aims to produce highest quality data in an efficient and rapid manner.

Currently the team is looking to fill two positions; a Laboratory Technician and Senior Laboratory Technician position.

The Laboratory Technician / Senior Laboratory Technician will join a collaborative team composed of clinical variant curators, clinical bioinformaticians, laboratory technicians and laboratory scientists, clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors, as well as research scientists.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Performing a wide range of laboratory procedures for clinical and research samples such as NGS library preps, methylation array and PCR based assays
  • Operating and maintaining Illumina MiSeq, NovaSeq 6000, NovaSeqX plus and other instruments
  • Setting up, operating, and maintaining of our various liquid handling robotics systems
  • Extracting, handling, and processing of a variety of specimen (DNA and RNA) and specimen details, patient data and administrative detail
  • Data entry into Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for specimen and laboratory processes

What we need from you

  • An Associate Diploma/Diploma/BSc in Biological Sciences or a related discipline plus an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of hands-on experience, training or professional accreditation
  • (Senior Laboratory Technician) 2+ years’ experience in NGS library preparation and sequencing on an Illumina sequencing platform, long-read sequencing and/or single cell RNAseq sequencing experience
  • Understanding of specimen reception and patient information
  • Demonstrable understanding of a wide range of molecular genetic techniques and technologies
  • Strong attention to detail, and the ability to perform laboratory work with a high degree of precision and accuracy
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets, database programs, and Microsoft Word and Excel
