ABOUT THE NATIONAL JUSTICE PROJECT

The National Justice Project is a human rights law firm that fearlessly fights to end discrimination. Our mission is to fight for truth, justice and accountability by eradicating systemic discrimination. We do this through the power of strategic legal action, social justice education, fearless advocacy and collaborative partnerships. We work to create systemic change and amplify the voices of communities harmed by government inaction, harm and discrimination.

OUR PROJECTS AND INNOVATION WORK

We work collaboratively to deliver innovative community projects to further our collective objectives of law and policy reform, access to justice and education. Our work brings together education, advocacy, technology and litigation work to deliver practical, positive impact in the community. Our projects and partnerships pipeline is diverse and abundant, and includes but is not limited to building community rights awareness, developing technology to increase access to justice, strategic advocacy and holding government to account.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Projects Lead will play a critical role in delivering a broad range of activities including diverse projects, policy, research and community engagement agenda. Some of the key responsibilities for this role could include:

  • Support and maintain projects such as CopWatch and Call It Out
  • Develop and deliver bi-annual Law Hack events
  • Prepare submissions, research papers and briefs
  • Develop and deliver engagement plans and build partnerships to expand the reach and impact of tools, services and resources
  • Provide support and advice to team members as well as other staff and the executive
  • Collate and deliver updates and reports from across the team to the executive and board
  • Consider and plan for new project areas as required.

KEY CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES

  • You must be comfortable motivating and managing cross-sector stakeholders across civil society, corporate, academia, government, frontline service providers and communities with lived and diverse experience.
  • You must be comfortable working with confronting subject matter and with communities that have experienced extensive trauma.
  • You will have completed tertiary level education, training or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • You must have a broad skillset and be capable of working across diverse focus areas.
  • There may be travel and media/public speaking required.
  • You must be highly motivated, proactive, positive and solution orientated.
  • You must have strong leadership, confidence, and advocacy skills.
  • You must be comfortable juggling multiple priorities with diligence and efficiency in a fast-paced workplace.
  • You will be resourceful and comfortable conducting your work with limited resources.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Projects, Partnerships, Policy, and Advocacy, including:

  • Contributing to and leading the development and implementation of existing and new projects including developing and maintaining high-quality project planning documentation to establish, track and deliver agreed project milestones, budget management and regular reporting.
  • Providing research and administrative support for the development and implementation of a range of collaborative projects, policy development, submissions and advocacy.
  • Developing and implementing evidenced-based evaluation using qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Maintaining records and translating activities, outcomes, and impact into project summaries, updates, reports and plans for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Developing and maintaining a strong and sensitive working relationship with partners, internal and external stakeholders, and the communities we work within, including working in a trauma-informed and culturally competent manner.
  • Organise, host and attend in-person and virtual meetings, webinars, workshops, events, campaigns, advocacy groups, roundtables etc. as required.
  • Contributing to fundraising, communications, advocacy and organisational activities as required.

Supervising Volunteers and Junior Staff, including:

  • Contribute to and support the National Justice Project’s university clinics and related student placements.
  • Providing day to day guidance to any team member that is assisting you, including volunteers and new or junior staff.

  • Expertise, interest or experience in systemic issues and reforms in policing, custodial, immigration and/or health systems.
  • Understanding of culturally safe and trauma informed practice.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, including ability to translate concepts and content into accessible formats.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities under tight deadlines.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience in managing projects from inception to delivery.
  • Experience working with communities that experience discrimination.
  • Experience working in a legal office, not-for-profit or community organisation.
  • Experience in evaluation using qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Research and evidence-based policy development and advocacy.
  • Experience applying for and acquitting grants.
  • Experience in developing and deploying public engagement campaigns.
