The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) is a vibrant and diverse organisation that represents over 26,000 academic and professional staff across Australia's universities and tertiary education providers. In Tasmania, we primarily represent staff at the University of Tasmania. We are excited to offer an opportunity for a part-time Union Organiser to join our Tasmanian team, based in Hobart with regular travel to regional worksites. This is a fixed-term position for 3 months at 0.7 FTE (equivalent to 24.5 hours per week), with the possibility of an extension based on future needs and potential changes within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

In this impactful role, you will work as part of a small, dedicated team, contributing to the NTEU's mission to advocate for and support workers in the higher education sector. Your duties will include:

  • Recruiting new members to strengthen the union's presence and influence.
  • Identifying potential workplace union representatives and fostering leadership across the workforce.
  • Establishing and maintaining networks of workplace union representatives, offering them support and training to be effective in their roles.
  • Visiting members and potential members across the University of Tasmania, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented.
  • Participating in campaigns and organising activities at local, state, and national levels.

What We're Looking For:

We are seeking an individual who brings a passion for advocacy and community organising, ideally with prior experience in trade union or community-based work. The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with members and stakeholders.
  • A commitment to social justice and equity in the workplace.
  • Experience in recruitment, training, or organising in a union or similar setting.
  • The ability to work flexibly, with arrangements available between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
