We are seeking an early career economist (recent graduate with up to three years’ experience) to join our growing consulting business in the Melbourne office and to become part of our national team.

THE ROLE

We are seeking an early career economist (recent graduate with up to three years’ experience) to join our growing consulting business in the Melbourne office and to become part of our national team.

The role will suit an individual with strong quantitative skills, some experience in applied cost-benefit analysis, and a strong interest in environmental and natural resources economics. You must be inspired by working with other professionals across the multi-disciplinary Alluvium Group.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior staff to provide project support. Over time, the successful candidate will be trained and assigned key project roles to further develop their own technical and general leadership skills.

Key requirements and responsibilities

The primary requirement of the role is to work with senior staff within NCEconomics to undertake challenging and complex economic analysis as it relates to natural resource management issues. In conjunction with senior staff, you will be required to:

  • Undertake research on key issues to provide insights on complex issues around resource management for our clients
  • Collect, collate and analyse socio-economic data for economic evaluation as required for different projects
  • Develop and run economic models to assess the impact of potential solutions to management problems
  • Contribute to and undertake basic statistical/econometric analysis and interpreting quantitative information
  • Contribute to project report writing, drafting recommendations and provision of advice to clients
  • Contribute to presentations to clients and stakeholders
  • Assist senior staff with drafting of project proposals and bids
  • Occasionally take part in overnight travel depending on project requirement
  • Work with NCEconomics and Alluvium employees as per project requirements

Key qualifications, skills and knowledge

  • A degree in economics (or similar degree with a major in economics), preferably with honours.
  • A complementary qualification in another discipline or further postgraduate qualifications will be highly regarded
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Research skills including literature and data review, data collection and collation
  • Skills in economic modelling such as cost-benefit analysis and/or cost effectiveness analysis
  • Ability to work in a team environment made up of both economists and non-economists
  • Past experience or interest in market and non-market valuation
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency (this includes ability to utilise MS Excel functions such as VLOOKUP, IF, Pivot Tables and general statistical functions) to automate tasks, and build economic models
  • Prior experience in the following statistical/econometric packages is not a key requirement but will be highly regarded e.g. Stata, @Risk and R
  • Familiarity with common Australian and international data custodians such as the ABS, ABARES and World Bank, UN/FAO will be advantageous
  • Knowledge of, or exposure to, contemporary natural resource management issues would be advantageous
