An exciting Permanent Part Time position has opened up within The Whole Family Team (WFT) for an experienced Aboriginal Specialist Mental Health Clinician. Within this role, you work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides specialist in-home and community based interventions for children and families with complex mental health, drug, and alcohol issues where the children have been identified as at risk of significant harm.

The successful incumbent will be providing direct interventions to families. You will assist the Whole Family Team to build capacity to provide culturally sensitive services to Aboriginal families receiving WFT support. Where appropriate this position will attend community events that may help to raise the profile of the WFT within Aboriginal Communities.

Selection Criteria

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Must also hold current Driver's Licence and willingness to use for work purpose travel
  2. Occupational Therapist Recognised tertiary qualifications & registration with AHPRA & significant clinical experience in a mental health setting, Counsellor Bachelor’s degree in counselling or a related field, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer
    Social Worker Must hold as a minimum a bachelor’s degree & eligibility for membership of AASW & significant clinical experience in a mental health setting, Nursing Relevant post-registration qualification & a minimum 3 years’ experience in a mental health setting, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate by the employer, Senior Psychologist a four year degree in psychology being a three year degree with a fourth year honours or who has qualifications deemed equivalent by the LHD & who is registered as a psychologist with AHPRA. Current Senior Psychologist or eligible for senior Psychologist grading (with no less than 12 months service at the 9th year of service and thereafter rate)
  3. Demonstrated experience and competence in family focused, evidence based psychosocial assessment and intervention with a complex caseload in a community setting. This includes specialist knowledge of;
    1. The impact and treatment of parental mental illness and drug and alcohol problems on family functioning
    2. intra-familial child abuse and neglect
    3. family focussed integrated treatment including risk assessment and safety planning
  4. Demonstrated advanced reasoning skills with proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal direct clinical supervision
  5. Demonstrated capacity to act as an independent consultant and clinical leader in the specialty area of family focused mental health
  6. Demonstrated partnership building and negotiation skills with a wide range of service providers and well developed understanding of the interface between services
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of the historical and contemporary issues which may impact on Australian Aboriginal family functioning and ability to provide a culturally appropriate service
  8. Evidence of an advanced level of verbal/written communication skills, analytical and interpersonal skills and the ability to apply these skills to contribute to the Whole Family Team ongoing evaluation, monitoring and enhancement of service delivery
    Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified and must not exceed the duration or conditions associated with the current visa.
