About Us

The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).

NBMLHD is seeking a Child and Family Counsellor to join our Community Counselling Service in providing general counselling within Primary Care and Community Health. The Community Counselling Service works within the First 2000 Days and Domestic and Family Violence Frameworks recognising the importance of early intervention.

The Child & Family Counsellor is responsible for the provision of counselling to individuals, families and children requiring a short to medium term intervention. This temporary position provides a valuable opportunity for a clinician to broaden their experience by working with a diverse range of clients and applying evidence based counselling models.

The successful candidate will be part of a supportive service that provides professional development opportunities, clinical supervision, peer support and cultural supervision to develop skills and support continued wellbeing.

Selection Criteria:

1. Degree in Social Work from an accredited course providing eligibility for membership of the Australia Association of Social Workers, or degree in psychology and evidence of registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
2. Demonstrated postgraduate experience in psychosocial assessment and intervention with children, adolescents and their families/carers across a wide variety of presenting issues across the life span including people affected by domestic violence, postnatal depression, depression and/or low risk suicide and interpersonal trauma
3. Demonstrated experience/knowledge of Child Protection responding and reporting responsibilities
4. Experience in and/or knowledge of the provision of therapeutic models and interventions appropriate for individuals, family and groups
5. Awareness of and/or experience working with people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, those who are culturally and linguistically divers (CALD) and/or come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds
6. Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working within a Primary Health Care framework, including building effective partnership with other relevant government, non-government and community organisations
7. Excellent written and oral communication skills, initiative, time management and demonstrated ability utilise information technology systems
8. Current Driver's Licence and willingness to use for work purpose travel. This may include driving long distances across the Local Health District
