PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Policy and Research Officer coordinates the development of a range of policy and regulatory strategy initiatives to support Nexa’s advice to clients and our advocacy with industry and government. The role is suited to someone with a background or a keen interest in energy regulation and policy.

You’ll be part of a tight-knit Nexa team, working closely with clients and partners to accelerate Australia’s energy transition as we play our part in the global effort to seize the opportunities of renewable energy and low-emissions technologies, while keeping Australian energy consumers in mind.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Retail and network energy policy and regulation across the NEM and/or WEM. Regulations and rule changes are moving targets, and keeping up with industry developments is a major challenge for organisations in the energy transition. You have the experience to anticipate and understand the impact of these changes, and ability to advise clients on how to adapt to the regulatory environment. You can work with governments and market bodies on effective policy and regulatory strategies and rule changes to accelerate the energy transition.
  • Relationship management. You’re good at managing constructive, mutually beneficial relationships to build on our ability to “get things done”.
  • Initiative. You’re a go-getter who is comfortable working with a reasonable degree of autonomy. You pick up the phone to progress something quickly and if you spot a moment where an intervention could make a crucial difference, you jump right in.
  • Adaptability. You enjoy a dynamic environment where things sometimes change quickly. You are personally adaptable as the circumstances require.
  • Curiosity and open-mindedness. You are genuinely curious about both people and policy ideas and like learning new things.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Expertise in energy or climate policy development and/or advocacy; energy market and network regulation; retail and wholesale market rules and regulations
  • Professional experience in state or federal government, or industry; and
  • Completed a qualification in a relevant field, or demonstrated equivalent professional experience

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Policy - analyse and review complex policy issues, identifying emerging issues, developing evidence-based options, and recommending solutions to resolve problems and mitigate risks.
  • Regulatory reform advice – assessment of regulations and rules, identify areas for change to accelerate the energy transition including a forward-looking assessment of regulatory trends and impacts.
  • Reports and submissions - Preparing briefing notes, reports, submissions for Nexa Advisory and clients on key policy and regulatory developments and useful research reports for the CEO.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, facilitating their engagement in, and contribution to, the identification and development of policy and regulatory reform solutions and to inform policy decision making.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on the implementation of regulations and rule changes and ensure the achievement of desired outcomes for clients.
  • Enhancing brand recognition – Support with building the NEXA Advisory brand and reputation through sharing NEXA Advisory’s profile on relevant public platforms.
