Purpose of the position

The purpose of the position is to:

  • Design, implement and evaluate communication and engagement strategies and activities with NHT member Houses, supporters, funders and other stakeholders.
  • Increase general awareness and understanding of the social and economic contributions of Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania.
  • Support NHT Team members to deliver projects and activities through communication activities and advice.

The role is part of a small, dynamic team, providing peak body support to a Network of 35 Neighbourhood Houses across the state. The team works collaboratively for social justice using a community development approach towards our vision for thriving Tasmanian communities.

Duration and hours

Contract Full or Part-Time to be negotiated.

February 2024 – 31 July 2024 (approximately 5 months with possible extension subject to funding)

Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania (NHT)

NHT is the peak body for the network of 35 Neighbourhood Houses located across the state. We provide:

  • Information sharing with sector and community
  • Sector consultation and co-ordination
  • Advocacy and representation to government and other decision makers
  • Resource, training, development and capacity building to enable better practices and functioning of organisations
  • Policy development and advice to the sector and government

Pay and conditions

The terms and conditions are those applying under the Social, Community,Home Care and Disability Services (SCHCADS) Industry Award 2010.

The position is classified at Level 5 Pay Point 1-3 depending on experience.

Superannuation will be paid at the mandated rate to the fund of choice.

The position requires:

  • Working in accordance with the values and purpose of NHT
  • Adhering to the policies and procedures of NHT
  • Supporting and assisting other staff members and projects, as required
  • Participating in processes, staff meetings and staff development opportunities as required by NHT.

Supervision

The Communication and Engagement Officer will work under the general supervision of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NHT.

Duties

To lead development and delivery of NHT’s organisational strategic communication activities including:

  • Preparing, implementing and evaluating a strategic communication plan
  • Ensuring delivery of high quality, consistent and effective communication outcomes

To support the NHT Team by:

  • Providing advice on and coordinating internal communication activities, materials and resources
  • Supporting production of all public and organisational documents, reports and presentations (including ensuring quality and consistency of messaging and branding)
  • Drafting and coordinating external advocacy, strategic engagement, social media and traditional media activities and resources in consultation with NHT team members and the CEO

To support established NHT and Neighbourhood House Network communication activities through:

  • The Weekly Network “newsletter” email (Monday)
  • Network peer discussion channels using MS Teams
  • Member engagement using written and verbal communication tools
  • Provision of marketing, promotion and presentation support for Network training and other activities
  • Provision of support to Network members to build their capacity with communication tools such as MS Teams, online resource libraries and social media channels
  • Ongoing evaluation of Network Member communication and overall engagement using tools Including analytics, member surveys and consultation.

To support organisation, marketing and promotion of Network events as a member of the NHT Team. Current annual events including:

  • Neighbourhood House Week (May)
  • NHT State Conference (September)

To support and deliver NHT’s external communication strategy using a variety of communication tools and channels including social media (Facebook, LinkedIn), the nht.org.au website and traditional media.

General duties:

  • Represent NHT at relevant meetings, forums and events as required
  • Contribute positively to the activities of NHT as a peak body for Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania
  • All other duties, relevant to the position, as directed by the CEO

Working environment

  • The position will be located at the NHT Office, 16b Elmsleigh Road, Derwent Park.
  • Travel within Tasmania is required, with some overnight trips.

Selection criteria

The successful applicant will have:

Essential

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications or comparable experience (at least two years working in a communication or media role is preferred).
  2. A commitment to social justice and community development principles and an awareness of the role of Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania.
  3. Demonstrated skills and experience in communication activities and project/event coordination, implementation, and review.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to a team approach with a variety of diverse stakeholders.
  5. Demonstrated capacity to undertake internal, external and media communication campaigns as well as demonstrated ability to design, implement, review and adjust communication approaches to gain outcomes.
  6. Demonstrated high level computer skills, particularly in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of computer software (including proficiency in Microsoft Teams).
  7. Working with Vulnerable People Card.

Desirable

  1. Possession of a valid, open driver’s licence.
  2. Knowledge and skills or capacity to quickly acquire skills to use MailChimp (or similar bulk email software), undertake basic website maintenance using content management systems and to manage and interpret social media and related analytics.
