ABOUT US

North Melbourne Language & Learning Inc. (NMLL) works with diverse and dynamic communities on the North Melbourne public housing estate and surrounding neighbourhoods. We deliver learning opportunities and community development programs for adult learners from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on building stronger communities.

The exciting opportunity available

Community Development Volunteers - engaging with community members, assisting us with events and at ongoing programs.

OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Supporting our weekly community gathering by engaging with community members, participating in activities, doing set-up and pack-up, and liaising with CD staff and service providers every Tuesday during term time from 9:30am-1pm
  • OR supporting our vibrant knitting & crochet group on alternate Thursdays from 11:30am-5:30pm

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

  • You have an interest in cultural & linguistic diversity and intercultural exchange
  • You are culturally competent and have the ability to work alongside people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds
  • You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • You are reliable and punctual
  • You have the ability to take direction and feedback from Community Development staff
  • You have, or are willing to obtain, a volunteer Working with Children Check and a current Police Check
  • You can commit to the role for a minimum of 6 months

Desirable:

  • You can speak a community language (Arabic, Somali, Chinese, Vietnamese, Oromo, Tigrinya, Amharic)
  • You have availability to volunteer longer than the initial 6 month period

TIMELINE

  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis - due to the number of applications we are unable to respond to all applicants
  • Interviews will be conducted via Zoom (preferably) or in person in January 2025
  • Volunteers are expected to commence in early February 2025
