Inner Melbourne Community Legal (IMCL) is an innovative and inclusive not-for-profit community organisation that provides free legal assistance to disadvantaged people in the City of Melbourne area. IMCL’s catchment includes North Melbourne, West Melbourne, Docklands, Kensington, Flemington, Carlton, Parkville and Melbourne CBD.
We are working towards an Australia where the law is fair and everyone has access to legal help if they need it. A place where there is a shared sense of fairness and wellbeing. We prioritise the most disadvantaged members of the community including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, disability, substance dependency and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
We design and deliver legal services to reach those dealing with critical life issues that may not otherwise be able to access the legal help they need. This includes Health Justice partnerships with major metropolitan hospitals, Housing Justice partnerships with homelessness agencies, youth outreach programs in schools and the Police Accountability Project. We also provide legal education and advocate for systemic reform.
In 2023, the Attorney-General committed funds to legal assistance service providers to deliver vital legal help to flood-affected communities resulting from the October 2022 floods to prevent further trauma, psychological and financial impacts.
IMCL was funded to deliver services to support community members impacted by the urban catchment of the Maribyrnong River flood. The funding has enabled IMCL to recruit dedicated climate justice lawyers, and a support team of legal education and engagement and paralegal officers.
The Graduate Lawyer will support the delivery of legal services, focused on fines and criminal law assistance so that individuals impacted by climate disaster can receive legal information, referrals, advice and/ or casework assistance.
At IMCL, we understand that you're capable of more than the experience on your CV. If you're passionate about what we do and excited by this role, even if you don't perfectly meet all of the criteria, we encourage you to apply and tell us why you're the right person for the job. FTE is negotiable.
IMCL highly values a diverse workforce. We strongly encourage applications from First Nations people, people with disability, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, people of all ages and people who identify as LGBTIQ+.
This role will be based across our North Melbourne and Kensington offices, in addition to regular work in outreach locations in our catchment as required.
A Police Check and a Working with Children Check is also required for this role.
