The Opportunity

The successful incumbent will lead the delivery of Council’s fire management function, working in conjunction with Council’s management team and external partners. 

The incumbent will focus on designing, developing, implementing, communicating, and evolving the fire management program.

About You

As the Senior Fire Management Officer, you will have significant experience in the delivery of effective bushland fire management strategy, program and projects.

You will have significant knowledge and expertise in conservation with an emphasis on fire management, natural area ecology, flora and fauna, legislative interpretation and conservation operations. 

Further but not limited to, you will possess high level people and relationship skills with demonstrated ability to work in a team environment communicating and motivating effectively at all levels of the organisation, contributing to a positive work environment with a strong focus on provision of quality customer service.

The position's focus will be:

• Lead the fire management team in the delivery of Council’s Bushland Reserve Fire Management Plan, including the fire mitigation program & projects and ensure work is carried out in a safe and professional manner in line with legislative and policy requirements. 
• Lead, develop and implement highly complex fire management plans and operational activities to ensure bushfire risks are managed for Council bushland and open spaces including fire trail networks, vegetation modification, planned burns including high complexity burns and bushfire responses, utilising the Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS), including undertaking the role of incident controller as required. 
• Coordinate the delivery of environmental assessments and prepare project designs, specifications, contract documents and budget estimates to deliver on capital and operational projects. 
• Represent Council and the interests of community safety at regional and state level planning and coordination activities. 
• Provide expert advice to key stakeholders on Council’s fire management programs, policies and procedures and ensure development application decisions are assessed against relevant standards and policies and in accordance with best practice fire management. 
• Develop, embed, and review Council’s fire safety policies, strategies, and systems to meet best practice and legislative requirements.
• Proactively identify and assess current and emerging fire management issues and ensure that appropriate control measures are considered, developed, and are capable of being successfully and sustainably deployed and maintained by relevant departments and employees.
• Lead and foster a high-performance team culture through adherence to a range of workforce management activities including training and induction of fire management team members.
• Fulfil duties in Council’s Local Disaster Coordination Centre, On Call and scheduled overtime arrangements as required.
• Prepare budget submissions and manage the recurrent expenditure for fire management activities using the various financial monitoring tools to achieve management objectives.
• Where work interacts with the environment, use all reasonable and practical measures to prevent or minimise environmental harm and comply with Council’s environmental policies, protocols, and procedures. Report all environmental risks, hazards, and incidents immediately to your leader.
