The NLC has the following two vacancies within our Caring for Country team:

  • Ranger Coordinator Garawa – based in Robinson River* - Full Time Ongoing
  • Ranger Coordinator Waanyi – based in Borroloola** - Full Time Ongoing
  • Salary Package: $100,476

Candidates with lived-experience or quantifiable experience in working with Aboriginal people in the environmental /cultural field would be ideal for these roles.

About the Role

These positions will manage, lead, and empower the local Aboriginal Rangers to deliver on their project plans, which are developed in partnership with the Traditional owners of these lands. You will be working closely with CFC Program staff, to ensure that the integration of Traditional Owner insights and WH&S standards are at the forefront of all land and sea management activities

This Coordinator roles are hands on and expected to lead, coordinate and monitor the Ranger groups operational service outcomes and performance in accordance with Garawa ranger operational plans and NLC requirements. It also has a diverse array of key responsibilities and accountabilities across other key function such as:

  • Stakeholder Relationships
  • Staff Management
  • Work Health and Safety

What You Will Bring:

You will bring strong negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills, coupled with high-level interpersonal and cross-cultural communication abilities. Your problem-solving expertise, experience in dispute resolution, and community liaison will be essential, along with your demonstrated experience in asset management and basic maintenance of equipment.

In addition to this, you will have:

  • Minimum Certificate IV level Tertiary qualifications (for example: Conservation and Land Management) in a relevant field or extensive relevant and equivalent experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant supervisory experience leading a team.
  • Previous experience in undertaking TO consultations in the development of land and sea management projects, ideally with Aboriginal people.
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence

We offer:

  • A base salary of $81,716 per annum plus 14.5% superannuation and salary sacrificing up to $15,900 + Meal Entertainment and Holiday Accommodation benefits up to $2,650 per year.
  • Other benefits under our Enterprise Agreement include:
    • District allowance of up to $4,797 per annum for individuals with dependents and $2,630 without dependents.
    • 5 weeks annual leave, leaving loading, 18 days personal leave;
    • Paid Christmas close down;
    • Upon completion of 12 months of service an Annual airfare with a net (in hand) value of $2,724

About the NLC

The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth. The NLC is established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 and its purpose is to serve its constituents who are Traditional Owners (TOs) and other Aboriginal people living in their region. Cultural knowledge and lived experience are central to the work that we do here at NLC. *Robinson River is located in the South West Gulf and is 144 km south-east of Borroloola and 798 km from Katherine. Situated on the banks of the river the township is situated in a beautiful landscape beneath the surrounding ranges. Historically and currently is a working cattle station. In 1992 their Land Claim was successful and the Garawa people were returned the Robinson River Station and surrounding region. Considered the ’Last Frontier’ in many nature-based employment opportunities, this region incorporates Aboriginal Land Trusts (ALT), and specifically the Garawa ALT which incorporates four different clan groups. Rangers from this region also work on the adjoining ‘hidden gem’ Ganalanga Mindibirrini IPA (Indigenous Protected Area).

**Borroloola is the capital of the Gulf region. This historic town has approx. 950 residents and is considered the gateway to the Gulf region and is famed for its excellent fishing. King Ash Bay, a great fishing spot 50km from Borroloola, also attracts thousands of visitors each year. Considered the ’Last Frontier’ in many nature-based employment opportunities, this region incorporates Aboriginal Land Trusts and the ‘hidden gem’ Ganalanga Mindibirrini IPA (Indigenous Protected Area).
