The Nossal Institute for Global health aims to improve the health of all people globally by deepening our collective understanding of how multiple systems operate and interact to shape health through applied research, learning and partnership.
This position is within a new project led by the Nossal Institute and funded by Wellcome, Climate Community Health Impacts Amongst Livestock Keepers in Kyrgyzstan (CCHALKK). The project involves a transdisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners from the University of Melbourne and Charles Sturt University in Australia, and the Association of Village Health Committees of Kyrgyzstan (AVHCK) and Ilbirs Foundation in Kyrgyzstan. It will investigate the human health impacts of climate change within livestock-keeping communities in Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, where livestock farming is of key importance to culture, livelihoods, and nutritional security.
Adopting a One Health approach, we will generate evidence necessary for taking effective action and developing policy that addresses human health vulnerabilities and strengthens resilience and adaptation to climate change, and advocates for climate action.
You will be based in the One Health Unit within Nossal Institute Limited (NIL), a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University of Melbourne. NIL is the operating arm of the Nossal Institute for Global Health, a multi-disciplinary team within the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne.
The Research Officer will support the project’s research activities and operations in data collection and management including surveys, interviews and discussion groups in collaboration with Kyrgyz partner organisations. The role involves detailed management and oversight of qualitative and quantitative data, data cleaning and integrity, and supporting Kyrgyz project research staff in data handling, plus collaboration and engagement with project partner organisations, and communities.
This position is part-time at 4 days a week or 0.8 full time equivalent with a 2-year contract.
You have a Bachelor’s degree in health, environmental science, development studies or a related field, plus a post-graduate qualification (or substantial progress towards one) with a research component. You will have at least three years’ experience working in health, environmental science, development studies or a related field.
You have an ability and enthusiasm to work successfully and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary, distributed international team, and uphold and promote equity, diversity, and collaboration in all activities and interactions.
