About the School/ Office

The School of Medicine offers two independent four-year post-graduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) programs in Fremantle and Sydney. The MD programs are fully accredited by the Australia Medical Council of Australia and have a growing reputation for producing high quality, well rounded medical graduate ready for internship.

The MD programs are exciting and challenging, giving students opportunities to participate in social justice activities, discuss and debate bioethical constructs, population and preventative health and develop research skills, while ensuring a continuing emphasis on medical knowledge and clinical and communication skills. Our curricula are integrated and clinically focused – putting the patients at the centre of everything we do.

In addition, it offers postgraduate programs in Health and Medical Sciences, Health Professional Education, Health Leadership and Bioethics, along with the undergraduate Pre-Medicine Certificate and Higher Degrees by Research.

About the role/ Position Purpose

The Domain Chair participates as a member of the School leadership team in shared decision making, ensuring that School goals are consonant with the University’s Objects and strategic direction as a Catholic university. Responsible to and reporting directly to the National Head of School of Medicine, this position assists in the planning and organisation of the School of Medicine, Fremantle Campus, including effective strategic management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Providing vision and leadership to build a strong cultural capability within the School to facilitate the maintenance of the School as a culturally safe place to work and learn for staff and students.
2. Managing the Aboriginal Health Team including delivering culturally appropriate ways of working in teaching and learning.
3. Maintaining and growing the connections, networks, relationships and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
4. Leading and managing the delivery, assessment, review and ongoing development of the Aboriginal Health curriculum (including liaising with other Domain Chairs, Discipline Leaders and other staff) and reporting directly to the National Head of School on these matters.
5. Managing the recruitment, retention and graduation of Aboriginal medical students and identifying and securing funding opportunities to support this.
6. Overseeing the management of Aboriginal medical student issues, wellbeing and access to wrap around supports as needed.
7. Exercising a special responsibility in providing leadership in fostering excellence in scholarship relevant to the discipline and within the University and wider community.
8. Other duties as directed by the National Head of School.

Essential

• Recognised leadership within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with solid community contribution, achievements and innovation. 
• Possession of a doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing with recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area (i.e. specialist fellowship).
• In addition there is a requirement for academic excellence which may be evidenced by an outstanding contribution to teaching and / or research and/or the profession.
• Medical qualifications with practice experience and AHPRA registration are highly desirable for this position. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated experience in Aboriginal health curriculum development, implementation and management.
• In determining experience relative to qualifications, consideration will be given to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional and/or community contributions and/or contributions to technical achievement.

• Supportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic University.
