North Queensland Women’s Legal Service (NQWLS) provides high quality legal and support services to women, specialising in the areas of family law, domestic violence, child protection, Victim Assist amongst other matters.

Our service area is vast – stretching from Sarina in the south, north to Cape York and west to the Northern Territory border. Staff are based in our offices in Townsville and Cairns and provide outreach advice clinics throughout the region to communities including Ayr, Charters Towers, Ingham, Innisfail, Mareeba, Atherton, Mossman and Port Douglas. In the last financial year, around 12,000 legal services were provided to vulnerable women.  Our work is challenging. However, it makes a difference in the lives of the women we assist.

SKILLS REQUIRED INCLUDE:

• Post admission experience in family law and domestic violence
• An understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and its impacts upon women
• Excellent communication skills
• A high level of knowledge of referrals both legal and non-legal that are appropriate for women who have experience domestic violence
• A commitment to social justice and working with vulnerable clients
• Excellent organisational, time management and file management skills
• Knowledge of and ability to work within a trauma-informed practice model
