About the opportunity

The Chaplaincy Coordinator and Senior Chaplain is responsible for coordinating the provision of chaplaincy services across the NSW SES to provide for the spiritual health and wellbeing of NSW SES members and their families. An integral responsibility of the role is driving the growth within the peer support program, the Senior Chaplain will also collaborate with other wellness programs, lead capability development groups, and ensure accurate reporting of chaplaincy activities.

The Chaplaincy Coordinator and Senior Chaplain is responsible for completing strategic reviews and performance improvement to embed best practice of spiritual and pastoral care across our diverse membership at the NSW State Emergency Service.

The role involves coordinating and supporting chaplains, providing mentorship, and developing policies and programs for our inclusive chaplaincy services. Responsibilities also include being the primary contact for chaplaincy matters, managing complex issues, and maintaining effective relationships within a diverse and geographically dispersed volunteer-based service.

The NSW SES serves the NSW community as the lead agency for floods, storms, and tsunamis as specified by the State Emergency Service Act 1989. We are recognised as the most versatile and widely used emergency service organisation in NSW.  Our volunteers are highly skilled, experienced, and well- trained in the wide variety of roles they perform.

Each NSW SES Unit is as unique and varied as the community it serves, reflecting the vast mix of risks faced and roles required in the diverse locations and communities across the state. In addition to flood, storm and tsunami, our Service provides specialist capabilities that include general land rescue, vertical rescue, road crash rescue, and alpine and remote area search and rescue.  The NSW SES responded to over 64,000 requests for assistance from the community over the 2021-22 year. 

The NSW SES has over 10,000 volunteer members, including reserves, and a full-time equivalent workforce of over 450.  There are 262 volunteer Units across the State and our volunteer Units are either local, community-based Units, State-wide or regional Units established to provide specialist capabilities. They are varied and unique in their capabilities, designed to address specific risks to communities of NSW.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Hold a faith group recognised degree, of at least three years fulltime, at the Bachelors level of Australian tertiary standards with a range of faith group specific subjects and/or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Provide documentation of appropriate faith group training, certification and endorsement.
• Be recognised and endorsed as qualified and suitable by recognised faith communities that are members of, or eligible to be members of, the National Council of Churches in Australia or one of its affiliated multi-faithed bodies and demonstrate a willingness to work with a multi-faith or non-religious membership.
• Have at least two years of faith group pastoral care ministry experience.
• Understand and adhere to professional ethical guidelines including maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity to cultural and belief differences.
• Demonstrated pastoral experience and knowledge of Peer Support and Psychological First Aid methodology and practice. A valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout NSW, often at short notice.
• Thorough knowledge of AIIMS principles and processes, and/or willingness to obtain competence within 12 months.
