Mr Guyula was re-elected in August to serve his third term in the Northern Territory Parliament as an Independent Member for the Mulka Electorate of North East Arnhem Land. He is committed to being a strong voice for all people living on Yolŋu country and beyond, and supporting all constituents across all clans, Yolŋu and Balanda. This position is based in Nhulunbuy in North East Arnhem Land.

The duties and responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing high level confidential secretarial, executive and administrative support services for the Member.
  • Assisting the Member with the day to day operations and management of the electorate office, particularly in the absence of the Member.
  • Assisting with general enquiries from constituents concerning a wide range of community, social and political issues.
  • Preparing reports, briefs and correspondence related to the business of the electorate, for the information and attention of the Member on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensuring the Member is informed of developments within the electorate particularly during absences from the electorate on parliamentary business.
  • If required and as directed by the Member, undertaking some or all electorate media responsibilities.
  • If required, assisting the Member with the management of the Members accounts and Acquittal System records.

Electorate Officers are Northern Territory Legislative Assembly employees.

Salary range: $90 129 - $112 571 (including salary and Out of Normal Office Hours Allowance).

Recruitment is for a full-time or part-time position. Negotiation of the position is flexible for family/ study/ life arrangements.

Essential Criteria (please address all of these criteria in your application)

  • Demonstrated commitment to the core principles of self-determination and treaty, and respect for Yolŋu country and diversity of clans and people in the Mulka Electorate.
  • High level cross-cultural and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to hear from and liaise with individuals, community groups, government and non-government organisations, and the media.
  • Excellent writing, research and analytical skills including the ability to prepare correspondence, briefing notes, submissions, speeches, newsletters, emails, media releases and review policy and legislation.
  • Sound knowledge of the electorate, including local clans and languages, as well as critical issues within the region.
  • Demonstrated superior organisational skills to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience planning, coordinating and implementing community-based projects involving a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgement and ability to perform at a high standard under limited supervision and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake responsibility for the day-to-day management of the electorate office and for supervision of other staff and volunteers.
  • Proven word processing/keyboard and computer skills in an office environment and experience in use of social media, databases, websites and digital communication tools.

  • Social media communication and engagement experience, and website management
  • Ability to travel
