About Odyssey Institute

Odyssey Institute is the training and workforce development arm of the broader Odyssey House and holds registration with VicRoads for the provision of drink and drug driver behaviour change programs. The Institute coordinates, promotes, and delivers the VicRoads Drink and Drug Drive Behaviour Change Programs. The Institute is also a registered training organisation (RTO ID 20995), and holds a strong strategic position in the health and community services industry sectors.

About this role

The key purpose of this position is the facilitation of the VicRoads Drink and Drug Drive Behaviour Change Programs (BCP). This is a Victorian Government mandated program for individuals who want to get their driver’s licence back after a suspension under the Road Safety Act.

The Drink and Drug Driver Behaviour Change Programs are a structured therapeutic group intervention underpinned by Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioural principles and skills. The programs are manualised with a facilitator handbook, power points, and a participant handbook.

The two types of programs we deliver are:

• Drug Driver Program and Drink Driver Program: This program run for six hours, comprising two, three-hour sessions conducted over consecutive weeks. As well as presession engagement and referral and follow-up when needed. Odyssey has limited demand for Drink Driver programs.
• Intensive Drink and Drug Driver Program: This program consists of three 3-hour group sessions and one one-on-one session. An additional one-session program is required for those attending the Drink Drive BCP. The facilitator needs to allow for 90 minutes for each of the 1 to 1 sessions.

Facilitators are required to be approved by VicRoads through a two-stage process that includes submission and assessment of documents related to qualifications and experience – to gain provisional approval. One provisional approval is confirmed facilitators then conduct a program and submit audio visuals of the program for audit/assessment.

Key areas of focus

Approved Facilitators are responsible for the delivery of the Program in accordance with the Drink and Drug Driver BCP Facilitator Handbooks.

• Facilitate and or co-facilitate group sessions according to VicRoads requirements
• Conduct screening and assessment processes prior to and within sessions as defined in the curriculum; and make appropriate referrals for further support as identified
• Monitor, recording, and reporting on participant attendance
• Provide of other reports as required
• Issue certificates of completion to participants who have met all VicRoads requirements for a program
• Positive interaction with OHV staff responsible for coordinating and promoting the programs
• Participate in regular clinical supervision with other team members
• Maintain professional status as required.

Key Selection Criteria

We are looking for an experienced, professional, and motivated facilitator to deliver our Drink, Drug Driver Behavioural Change Program, in accordance with VicRoads requirements. Someone who is keen to engage with our diverse individual client base and who can exercise empathy with participants attempting to change behaviour and to regain their driver license.

To be successful in this role, you must:

• Hold a relevant tertiary qualification in psychology, social work, health, human services, preferably including working with people with addictions; and working with offenders.
• Hold the following units of competency (if not included in the above qualification/s):
  
  • Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues (CHCAOD004)
  • Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues (CHCAOD006)
  • Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans (CHCAOD009)
  • Managing small groups and group-work (available in multiple Training Packages)

• Have completed approved training in Motivational Interviewing foundation skills (post-2012). If applicants cannot provide evidence of having undertaken MI skills within that timeframe, then Odyssey suggests undertaking the online Foundational MI Skills accessible from https://www.hma.co.nz or other providers (refer to the MINT website)

• Have at least two years working with offender populations/mandated clients and behaviour change interventions.
• Have completed Forensic Fundamentals training, or equivalent at the time of application
• Demonstrate high level group facilitation/co-facilitation skills for behaviour change including use of:
  
  • Cognitive behaviour and motivational techniques.
  • Understanding of the motivations for drink/drug driving, consequences, risk taking, impulsivity and decision making.
  • Ability to lead groups through a variety of interactive activities and workbook completion.
• Demonstrate proficient use and analysis of screening and assessment tools and referral process.
• Demonstrate flexibility and availability to facilitate/co-facilitate a series of two 3-hour group sessions scheduled one week apart as required.
• Hold a valid Victorian driver’s license with no more than six (6) demerit points including evidence of having had no license disqualification or suspensions.
• Other criteria as required by VicRoads.

Evidence of such vaccination status will be requested during the onboarding process and offers will be rescinded where such evidence cannot be provided.
