Role Purpose:

The Family Drug Support Therapist aims to assist the families, loved ones and significant others of clients who experience problematic AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) use. This role works from an intersectional lens through a combination of strength based individual and whole of family therapeutic interventions. The Family Drug Therapist also provides strength based brief interventions via a single session family work model, family-based assessments, and case management utilising collaborative practice. The key purpose of this position is to reduce the harms resulting from problematic alcohol and other drug use, provide strategies to support the person impacted by AOD use and to increase family wellbeing and safety.

Key areas of focus:

  • Supporting the Team:
    • To implement change and promote a culture of best practice.
    • To develop, implement, monitor, and review client-focused clinical practice.
    • In supporting staff while fostering a positive team culture, consistent with work plans, organisational expectations, policies, and procedures.
    • In supporting the student placement program and supervising students as requested.
    • Providing family based secondary consultations to the wider AOD team.
  • Deliver family therapy that is evidence informed and evidence based.
  • Provide psychoeducation, case management and family therapy to individuals and groups.
  • Deliver evidence-based and evidence informed family therapy utilising an intersectional lens.
  • Utilise client engagement strategies that are flexible and includes a collaborative approach within a broader AOD team, with other services and with family members. This may also include joint client sessions with existing clinicians working with the clients.
  • Conduct family-based assessments which would then inform support and referral pathways for family members, loved ones and significant others.
  • Conduct MARAM intermediate assessments with persons using violence or victim survivors as needed, also creating safety plans.
  • Provide coordinated services within a framework of a shared client plan & case management.
  • Providing information, support, and secondary consultation to other service providers.
  • Create quarterly reports/presentations for DFFH in line with our funding obligations.

A week in the role:

If you were here last week, you would have:

  • Accepted referrals and conducted family-based assessments.
  • Held a caseload of family counselling clients.
  • Attended clinical review meetings.
  • Provided specialist secondary consultations to other staff regarding their clients and their families.
  • Been involved with the broader organisation strategic plan.

Key Selection Criteria:

We are looking for an experienced and passionate individual to assist the families, loved ones and signification others of clients who experience problematic AOD use.

To be successful in this role, you must have…

  • Relevant Health, Social or Welfare related tertiary/degree qualification with experience and/or an Associate Diploma with substantial experience.
  • Certificate IV in AOD or have completed the required competencies (or able to complete within the first 12 months of employment).* (Refer Appendix A).
  • Skills and training in counselling, family therapy, family work, group work, case management
  • An understanding of the difficulties families of clients with co-occurring mental health and alcohol and other drug disorders are facing.
  • Skills in the management and treatment of persons with co-occurring mental health and alcohol and other drug disorders
  • Ability to liaise and communicate productively with a wide variety of people from all levels across the family, mental health, alcohol and other drug, and allied health and welfare sectors.
  • Proven skills in record keeping, report writing, maintaining client files.
  • Sound computer literacy.
  • Proven ability to coordinate tasks.

*Appendix A (AOD Competencies)

OHV requires staff in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies, OHV will invest in the staff’s professional development by providing them through our registered training organisation (RTO).
The competencies required in the first 12 months of employment are:

  • CHCAOD001 – Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
  • CHCAOD004 – Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD006 – Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD009 – Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans
