About this opportunity:
We are seeking an experienced Clinician to step into the Senior Clinician, counselling, and assessment role. As a senior clinician you will be conducting comprehensive assessments and provide a range of advanced counselling interventions to assist complex clients and their family members to change harmful behaviours resulting from problematic AOD use.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to provide clinical supervision, encompassing guidance, support, and oversight in a clinical setting.
Candidates with experience working with forensic clients, facilitating groups and supervising other staff will be highly regarded!

Duties include but are not limited to…
- Providing high quality engagement, assessment, treatment and support services to individuals and their families, through evidence-based, therapeutic counselling and group work.
- Conducting comprehensive assessments including:
- Ascertaining information on substance abuse, history, mental health, and risk.
- Determining if a client requires a standard or complex treatment response.
- Utilising the mandated AOD assessment tool.
- Arranging further assessments and secondary consults if required; and
- Presenting assessments at clinical review and making recommendations.
- Developing treatment plans and providing advanced counselling interventions and referrals to meet the individual needs of clients and their families, including those with complex needs.
- Apply an in-depth understanding of the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management (MARAM) Framework to effectively identify, assess, and manage family violence risks, ensuring appropriate escalation and intervention when necessary.
- Providing information, education, and practical assistance to clients to help them to reduce the harm of their substance use.
- Providing clinical leadership, guidance, and supervision to less experienced clinicians.
- Support student placements.
- Support the Counselling Coordinator to implement change and promote a culture of best practice.
- Work alongside other senior clinicians to hold portfolios or projects that support the catchment and their staff and programs, and further the strategic plan.
- Model good self-care to others.
- Facilitate Clinical review as needed.
A week in the life:
If you were here last week, you would have…
- Conducted AOD Comprehensive Assessments for clients accessing AOD services.
- Supported a counselling case load of clients including attending care team meetings for risk management.
- Been involved in group projects such as Kickstart, Choices programs, Day Program and other special areas of development such as clinical review.
- Supported the other clinicians within the team with further clinical support.
- Co-facilitated meetings with the other seniors within the team.
Key Selection Criteria:
We are looking for an experienced and passionate Clinician to assist our clients and also provide day-to-day support and practice guidance to the wider team of counselling and assessment clinicians.
To be successful in this role, you must meet the following:
- Relevant health and or welfare Tertiary/Degree qualification e.g., in Social Work, Psychology, Nursing or Allied Health Sciences with experience and/or an Associate Diploma with substantial experience.
- Completion of the AOD Skill Set for Health Professionals (or commitment to obtain one of these within 12 months of employment). Staff will be fully supported in obtaining the skill-set. * (Refer Appendix A)
- Experience in the provision of assessment and counselling services, preferably with AOD or dual diagnosis clients.
- Experience with therapeutic approaches such as: Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Coping Skills Training, Family Inclusive Practice, self-help groups, Community Reinforcement Approaches.
- Demonstrated understanding of community-based interventions for reducing alcohol and drug related harm.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with clients, families, colleagues, stakeholders, and other service providers.
- Proven ability to work with a range of people and organisations (including specific client groups such as Aboriginal, CALD and Forensic clients) in a non-judgmental and respectful manner.
- A demonstrated commitment to teamwork and the ability to take appropriate individual and team responsibility for the welfare of clients.

OHV requires staff in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies, OHV will invest in the staff’s professional development by providing them through our registered training organisation (RTO).
The competencies required in the first 12 months of employment are:
- CHCAOD001 – Work in an alcohol and other drugs context.
- CHCAOD004 – Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues.
- CHCAOD006 – Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues.
- CHCAOD009 – Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans.
