Context & Purpose of Role

Ondru is seeking a dynamic and proactive Research & Policy Officer to join our team. It’s an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about social justice and human rights to contribute to policy development, advocacy, and support art based community projects (refugees, domestic violence, homelessness and international development). You will play a key role in conducting in-depth research, preparing reports, and supporting the organisation’s strategic initiatives and developing frameworks. You may also be involved in engaging with stakeholders and contributing to discussions that shape Ondru’s direction. Time Commitment

  • 5 to 7 hours a week in total (2 hours face-to-face attendance at Ondru Studio or pop-up office location in CBD on a weeknight)
  • Face-to-face attendance at a monthly workshop (5 hours on a weekend)
  • A minimum commitment for a period of 6 months
  • Must be Melbourne-based to ensure connectivity

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

The position is responsible for:

  • Policy Research & Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on social justice, human rights, and community development issues to inform Ondru’s strategic direction and advocacy efforts.
  • Policy Development & Advocacy: Assist in developing policy recommendations, position papers, and advocacy materials to support Ondru’s mission and initiatives.
  • Report Writing & Documentation: Draft and edit research reports, policy briefs, and other key documents to support decision-making and organisational initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with internal teams, community partners, and external stakeholders to facilitate collaboration on policy and research projects.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Support the organisation in tracking and assessing the impact of projects, policies, and advocacy efforts to refine strategies and ensure effectiveness.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A passion for people and a strong commitment to the purpose and values of Ondru.
  • Demonstrated sound experience in policy and research work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organisational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive, “hands-on” approach with the ability to take initiative and drive results.
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Proficient in computer literacy, with access to your own laptop.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

To be successful in this position it is preferred that you have:

  • Tertiary qualification (or studying towards one) in relevant field;
  • Open-minded with a willingness to challenge your own thinking and have the ability to adapt and be flexible to the changing needs of the organisation;
  • Be committed to working in a team environment while promoting respect, inclusivity and collaboration; and
  • Be hardworking, hands on, energetic and vibrant.
