The Senior Policy Officer provides guidance and advice on policy and practice issues and develops strategic policy submissions in relation to the functions of the Office of the Public Guardian promoting and protecting the rights and interests of vulnerable people.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, research and analyse policy issues relating to the provision of services to vulnerable people.
  • Prepare and contribute to the preparation of timely and well-researched submissions, briefs and other policy documents on complex issues.
  • Support more senior officers with preparation for inter-departmental and sector meetings.
  • Liaise and collaborate with other areas of OPG, government agencies and non-government organisations on policy issues, maintaining positive and collaborative relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Provide high-level advice on relevant policy, legislation and practice.
  • Understand, or can quickly acquire an understanding of, child protection, youth justice, guardianship, disability, aged care, justice, health and mental health sectors, particularly in relation to regulatory and policy frameworks and service delivery.

There are no mandatory qualifications required to undertake this role, however formal qualifications in law, public policy, social policy or other degrees relevant to the role will be highly regarded. Practical experience in public or social policy and/or interpreting and applying legislation will also be favourably regarded.
