First Nations Clean Energy Network

This position is designated as an Indigenous Identified Position. The filling of this position is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and s 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and s 8(4) of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic).

Original Power is a key founder of the First Nations Clean Energy Network and is actively involved in supporting the Network.

The Network will ensure First Nations people play a central role and harness the opportunities from Australia’s clean energy boom. Together we will support community-owned renewable projects to deliver lower-cost, reliable energy. We will power job opportunities and strong economies. We will also form strong industry partnerships, sharing the benefits of a renewable future. We will back new projects so we play a role in addressing climate change.

Our mission is to:

  • Support communities to drive the development of clean energy projects that provide direct benefits to residents through reduced household energy costs and more reliable energy

  • Establish an innovation hub, promoting the implementation of best practice principles that should underpin all agreements for land use and benefit sharing between First Nations groups, companies and investors, while building community capacity through training and employment for First Nations people to participate in the renewable energy sector.

  • Advocate to lift significant federal and state regulatory barriers to renewable energy development and stoke government investment in technology, innovation and infrastructure.

The network is made up of First Nations people, communities and organisations, collaborating with industry, investors, unions, academics, legal and technical experts. It will ensure our people are part of the renewable energy revolution. Our communities deserve ready access to household solar, we want to drive community-owned clean energy projects and secure equitable arrangements for large scale renewable projects on our lands.

We are seeking a dedicated and community-focused Director to drive impactful engagement and advocacy for the First Nations Clean Energy Network. In this role, you will build and strengthen partnerships with communities, government, industry, and key stakeholders to ensure First Nations leadership and self-determination are central to the clean energy transition. Working closely with the Network team and Steering Group, you will develop new initiatives, support community-led solutions, and facilitate meaningful collaboration to ensure First Nations communities share in the benefits of the renewables boom.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  • Apply your commitment to self-determination by ensuring engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities so that the Network is driven by their vision and interests.

  • Use your skills as an effective collaborator to build a sense of shared mission, matching ambitious vision with the skills to enable the development of strategy, connections, systems and resources.

  • Utilize your experience in advocacy, policy development, lobbying and project management in keeping multiple strands of work running simultaneously and navigating complex and fast-moving issues

This is an Indigenous Identified Position.

Experience - Required

  1. At least three - five years' experience in high level strategic and organisational management
  2. Strategic leadership skills and knowledge of specialist areas of policy such as climate change, community engagement, renewable energy, Native title, policy and legal frameworks relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land management and ownership or cultural heritage
  3. High level of cultural knowledge with experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations
  4. Excellent communication skills with proven ability to generate high quality research-based content on deadline for a range of audiences
  5. Excellent organisational skills including time management and coordination of activities involving a wide range of people

Qualifications & Skills - Highly Desirable

  1. Experience working in community political and/or social movement campaigns
  2. Familiarity with budget management, corporate governance, employment policies and procedures relevant to a small organisation.
