About the job

The Mental Health Clinician will have a direct role in the engagement, assessment and coordination of care for young people accessing headspace services and will assist in the referral of young people to appropriate programs (including research interventions) either within the headspace centre or other community agencies.

Reporting to the Clinical Services Manager you will:

  • Provide youth-friendly mental health services, conducting intake assessments, AOD screening, risk assessment and referrals to appropriate services.
  • Collaborate with young people and families in care planning, delivering brief interventions and group programs.
  • Participate in case reviews and multi-disciplinary meetings to ensure coordinated, team-based care.
  • Build community relationships, attend youth network meetings, and lead mental health awareness and service development initiatives.
  • Provide a comprehensive intake service to young people, community members and professionals seeking services.

Skills and experience

The following criteria must be met for consideration for this position:

  • Approved tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing and full/provisional general registration with AHPRA or AASW eligibility.
  • Experience or knowledge working with young people (12-25), providing mental health care, assessments, risk management, and brief interventions using sound ability to make decisions, problem solve, and risk manage, in relation to intake and ongoing treatment options.
  • Ability to plan recovery and support needs using a shared decision-making approach and family-inclusive framework. Experience in the planning, provision and evaluation of group-based interventions for young people and their families/ carers.
  • Skilled in community engagement, group interventions, and working with diverse, culturally sensitive populations (incl. LGBTIQ+, First Nations). Experience in the provision of community awareness and development activities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork with a commitment to trauma-informed, gender-affirming, and culturally safe practices.
