about the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Digital Literacy & Archives Coordinator to join our team, preferably with formal library qualifications and a proven track record in archives development and digital asset management. Answerable to the General Manager and Operations Manager, the successful candidate will coordinate the running of the Digital Literacy Program across a number of remote Indigenous communities. This position isn’t just for anyone. You will be living remotely which can be challenging, requiring a resourceful and flexible person to succeed. However, for the right person this is a rewarding and potentially life changing role. The position will allow you to become a part of a very special community and contribute to its growth, developing an understanding of Warlpiri and other local cultures. The successful candidate will need to have an understanding of the political, social and economic factors affecting Indigenous Australians in remote areas.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Considerable travel through Aboriginal Lands rarely visited by outsiders.
- Potential for weekend/evening work (additional hours negotiated with TOIL).
- Getting a National Police Check and OCHRE Card - Working with Childrens Check.
- Living in shared accommodation with other PAW Staff. Housing in community is limited, so it will be necessary to live in shared accommodation. PAW can only provide housing for the successful applicant and cannot provide housing for partners or other family.
THE POSITION IS OPEN TO

- The successful candidate will manage the Digital Literacy program and PAW Archiving project, ensuring milestones and targets are met. The role will also focus on driving community engagement in regard to training and employment, especially with women and young adults.
DIGITAL LITERACY
- Management of the Language & Culture room, providing access and support for the community.
- Design and facilitate engaging, inclusive workshops that develop digital literacy and media skills.
- Deliver workshops, digital support and training in neighbouring communities.
- Providing accessible and current information around ICT services and assist with troubleshooting.
- Project management, report writing and collecting community feedback.
- Identifying, training and supporting Digital Mentors on pathways to employment.
- Training Digital Mentors to assist community members with the Mukurtu Archive platform.
- Support other PAW coordinators with projects within the Video, Radio & Music departments.
- Support PAW community events, concerts and engagement trips to PAW communities.
- Other duties as required.
MANAGEMENT OF PAW MEDIA ARCHIVES
- Manage the Archiving & Digitising Project in conjunction with PAW Management & Board.
- Supervise the L&C room and private Archive viewing space in conjunction with PAW’s Senior Warlpiri Cultural Officer.
- Supervise and support staff and community members involved in the project.
- Create a plan of action and timeline for the execution and completion of the project.
- Undertake training as required in Mukurtu, database design and online asset management.
- Design and provide non-accredited archives training to staff and community members in Yuendumu and neighbouring communities.
- Develop policy and a user friendly ‘how to’ manual for the archiving of audio-visual material, in conjunction with WMAC staff and management.
- Liase with third-party organisations about potential opportunities for development and support of the Archive and make recommendations to PAW management, for example First Nations Media Australia.
- Examine PAW’s current collection and extract and catalogue data on essential information.
- Make recommendations in collaboration with PAW Media’s Senior Warlpiri Cultural Officer on what audio-visual media should be given priority for preservation, digitisation and cataloguing.
- Oversee the transfer of audio-visual material onto stable digital formats, supported by FNMA.
- Manage the uploading of audio-visual media to the Mukurtu online portal.
- Catalogue audio-visual materials as necessary with the support of PAW Cultural Advisors.
- Develop a user-friendly database in English and appropriate language for the archives metadata.
- Organise the translation of audio-visual material to ensure content is catalogued correctly.
- Drive community engagement and support individuals with contributing their own collections to the PAW Archives.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Demonstrated experience in aspects of multimedia work and project management.
- Experience facilitating workshops and training in multimedia an/or digital literacy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated capacity for resourcefulness, self-motivation and independent decision making.
- Capacity to live and work with a small team.
- Understanding of the political social and economic factors affecting Indigenous people.
- Current Australian Driver’s Licence (manual vehicle).
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Experience living and working in a remote Australian indigenous community.
- Experience working with Indigenous Australians or socially disadvantaged clients.
- Experience and training in audiovisual archive systems or equivalent library work.
- 4WD experience.
ABOUT PAW MEDIA
PAW Media and Communications is a Warlpiri owned and run Not-for-profit Organisation based in Yuendumu, Northern Territory. PAW was originally established as ‘Warlpiri Media Association’ in 1983, but now trades under the name ‘PAW Media and Communications’. The name ‘PAW’ is an acronym that reflects the Pintubi, Anmatjere and Warlpiri language groups that are serviced by the organisation. For over 35 years PAW has been creating TV, films, radio, and music, in language, according to local cultural protocols. In addition to creating local media productions and documenting local culture, PAW provides media training, digital literacy programs and employment opportunities for the people of Yuendumu and surrounding communities.
ABOUT THE LOCATION
Yuendumu has a population of approximately 1000 people, predominantly Warlpiri. The community is the main service delivery centre for Warlpiri Aboriginal Lands, and it provides necessities for residents. Among Yuendumu’s services is a health clinic, two general stores, post office, school, and police station. It is the only community in its region with a public swimming pool.
