Celebrating its 50th year in 2025, Pedal Power champions the cause of cycling in Canberra, successfully improving cycle safety and infrastructure through strong and consistent advocacy. Pedal Power is a member-based not-for-profit association which is well respected as the leading voice for cycling in the Australian Capital Territory and the key organisation for recreational and transport cycling. Pedal Power works to encourage all Canberrans to see cycling as enjoyable, convenient and an everyday activity.

Representing around 5,500 members, Pedal Power provides a range of services to our members including 24/7 cycling insurance, social rides, bike skills courses (including the Big Skills for Small Bikes program for young children and their parents), the Bike Library and community cycling events.

Role

Pedal Power is looking for a capable and flexible individual who can balance a multitude of tasks utilising contemporary business practices and organisational skills across a four-day week. Our ideal ED will be a considered decision maker, able to work both independently and under the direction of the Board.

We are seeking an influential and collaborative leader, who can work effectively with a small Board and manage finances, business tasks and operations while maintaining a focus on long term strategic priorities.

We seek an ED who will engage and develop lasting, positive and effective relationships with our stakeholders (including Government, other cycling organisations, members, staff, volunteers and commercial partners).

This role provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the ACT’s leading cycling association and maintain and increase its membership. A background in cycling is not essential; however, you must be committed to driving our mission to advance Canberran’s health and well-being through the promotion of the benefits cycling.

About You

You will have proven ability and experience to:

  • deliver stable and diverse revenue streams – including seeking alternative sources of revenue through government grants, philanthropic or corporate support – to maintain a strong financial position through growth strategies which significantly increase the offerings and footprint of Pedal Power to grow membership
  • relate to people at all levels (from ACT Government, sponsors, partners, and members) and achieve high level credibility with stakeholders
  • be the face of Pedal Power to deliver useful and effective communications and marketing, including representing Pedal Power in the media and preparing high-quality written submissions
  • engage staff and volunteers to successfully implement programs, events and member services which manage risk and meet key performance indicators to deliver Pedal Power’s strategic plan
  • analyse and report on financial statements and develop and implement a tightly focussed annual budget supported by a contracted accounting service
  • try new things including identifying commercial opportunities, testing ideas and advocating for change.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate will have proven leadership skills and the ability to achieve Pedal Power’s mission and objectives through:

  • excellent interpersonal, communication and stakeholder management skills, and ability to advocate for change
  • experience managing paid staff and unpaid volunteers to successfully deliver day-to-day business operations, projects/programs and individual events
  • sound business acumen and judgement, ability to think strategically and engage and report to a Board
  • understanding an ED’s governance role, legal, risk and financial responsibilities, including compliance with relevant legislation.
