About the role

This role will be crucial in establishing and nurturing strong connections with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. They will actively engage in local initiatives and partnerships that aim to improve access to education, training, health, and well-being services for these communities. They will work alongside local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations, mainstream organisations, and communities to develop and implement initiatives promoting cultural preservation, self-determination, socioeconomic inclusion, and equity.

The individual in this role will aid in achieving Yarra City's goal of effectively executing the Yana Ngarna Plan and its yearly action plans. They will aid in maintaining relationships with organisations led by Aboriginal individuals, as well as coordinating programs that celebrate the history, culture, perspectives, and important occasions of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The successful candidate would join the Equity and Community Development Branch in the Community Strengthening Division. The Equity and Community Development Branch leads and supports programs and initiatives to promote community health, safety, and wellbeing; build confidence, capacity and resilience for diverse communities; and support under-resourced communities and other groups disadvantaged by systemic barriers and social injustice.

About you

To excel in this position, it is essential to embody the Yarra Principles and Values. Additionally, you must possess strong problem-solving skills and demonstrate a deep understanding, respect, and sensitivity towards the diverse cultures and traditions of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This involves a comprehensive knowledge of the policies and regulations at the local, regional, and national government levels that directly impact these communities.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience collaborating with First Nations peoples and communities and demonstrating a strong understanding of current and emerging issues that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Proven community development experience, engaging with community and being led by community in designing and implementing initiatives that deliver sustainable outcomes.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to consult and liaise effectively with a diverse range of people and communicate effectively in writing.
  • Proficient in office software applications for internet usage, word processing, creating slideshows, email, and working with spreadsheets.
