Purpose of Role
The Team Leader, Yarn’n Strong, leads ADA Australia’s Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander disability advocacy project, coordinating its establishment, design, and delivery as part of the Information, Linkages & Capacity Building (ILC) initiative.
The project aims to raise awareness of disability rights for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people and help individuals and communities build the skills and confidence to exercise these rights.
The Team Leader ensures the delivery of culturally appropriate activities that inform Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people with disability, their families, and carers about their rights. This includes providing training on disability rights, self-advocacy, and navigating complaints processes.
The role supervises a small Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander team, manages stakeholder relationships, and works closely with the Manager, Disability and Business Development to achieve ADA Australia’s strategic goals.
This is an Identified position. ADA Australia considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act QLD 1991.
Key Position Duties
- Lead and coordinate the establishment and delivery of the Yarn’n Strong ILC project.
- Lead the recruitment, selection and induction of new staff.
- Set clear performance expectations, monitor, and analyse key performance indicators, identify and provide feedback on areas for improvement and ensure all services are delivered adhering to relevant cultural protocols and are culturally safe and appropriate.
- Provide culturally appropriate guidance, supervision, and support to staff, including regular 1:1 meetings and performance planning and reviews, to help individual team members and partner organisations achieve their identified goals and KPIs.
- Coordinate training and continuous learning initiatives aimed at enhancing team members' and partner organisation’s skills and knowledge, while ensuring adherence to all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Track and report on project deliverables and targets, including the preparation of reports for the relevant government departments/funding sources.
- Input into and monitoring of the project budget.
- Develop, maintain and manage relationships with key stakeholders including but not limited to ILC partners, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services, NDIA, NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, Queensland Independent Disability Advocacy Network and other relevant organisations and peak bodies.
- Support the Yarn’n Strong team and partner organisations through the external quality certification processes.
- Continually review project procedures and develop, implement and monitor quality improvement strategies and processes to support the success of the project.
- Develop a supportive environment through working collaboratively to share and generate ideas and solutions.
- Participate in and contribute to Workplace, Health and Safety activities to ensure a safe work environment for clients, staff, visitors and the community.
- Ensure that all statutory requirements are met or exceeded (eg. state legislation, federal legislation, funding agreements, other relevant legislation and regulations).
- Assist through AS/NZS ISO 9001:2015 and other quality certification processes.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of all policies and procedures that support the inclusion and participation of people with disability.
- Participate in the organisation’s performance management process.
- Work collaboratively with other ADA Australia services.
Key Selection Criteria (please address the following):
- Identifies as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and be accepted by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person.
- A tertiary qualification in human services / leadership / management or equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and/or training.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills with the ability to develop, mentor and supervise staff to foster a cohesive team.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges and roadblocks, fostering a solutions-oriented approach that contributes to the overall success of the team.
- An understanding of and experience in delivering services and supports to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and simple manner.
Essential Requirements
- Current Queensland Driver’s licence.
- Current (less than three (3) years old) pre-employment National Criminal History Certificate (ongoing renewal every 3 years at employee’s expense).
- Valid NDIS Worker Screening Clearance (paid workers) at employee’s expense.
- Valid Working with Children – Blue Card (paid workers) at employee’s expense.
