Job Purpose & Reporting
The principal role of the Media Communications Officer position is to coordinate and manage the media strategy and communications and publications for the QCU.
The position will report to the General Secretary for media management and the Assistant General Secretary for communications and publications.
Key Responsibilities
The Media and Communications Officer is expected to undertake the following duties
- Develop strategies, including key messaging to support QCU campaigns and effective engagement with external media;
- Draft and produce media releases and copy for communications including relevant newsletters, emails and other forms of written engagement with affiliates, activists and external stakeholders;
- Provide support for graphic design for QCU communications;
- Manage day to day engagement with external media and arrange interviews as required;
- Build the profile of the Queensland Council of Unions, including the QCU General Secretary as a strong effective voice and advocate for Queensland working families;
- Coach and mentor other media and communications officers within affiliate unions to help build their capacity.
Required Knowledge and Experience
- Tertiary qualifications in communications or public/media relations is highly desirable.
- Proven previous experience in a communication, media/PR role within the union movement, politics or with a social justice based organisation.

- Well developed capacity to develop strategy and key messaging for media content.
- Proven capacity to manage projects and meet competing deadlines.
- Ability to write effective and engaging content.

Key Selection Criteria
- Previous experience providing media management within a union, political environment or a social justice based organisation.
- Ability to produce evidence of previous work including successful media campaigns, copy content, and basic graphic design for communications.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other team members and stakeholders, and to self-manage and work to deadlines, including applying a high level of attention to detail.
- Well evidenced ability to demonstrate the values and principles of unionism, and to practice respect and safety for all stakeholders, including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and other diversity groups within the union movement and community.
