Natural Resource Management / Agricultural Extension Trainee Officers x8 - Great Barrier Reef Catchments

Queensland Farmers' Federation

The Queensland Government has engaged the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) to facilitate the Agricultural Extension Work Placement Program (AEWPP), an internship-style program for up to eight early-career extension officers.

This is your opportunity to become part of a unique program that will provide you with the networks and skills to engage with primary producers and support their adoption of improved land management practices throughout the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Catchments. You will participate as part of a unique cohort with cross-industry trainees and be mentored by experienced extension practitioners.

The Agricultural Extension Work Placement Program (AEWPP) connects early career extension professionals with host agribusinesses or natural resource management organisations to assist landholders in the Great Barrier Reef Catchments. Work placement positions are open to recent graduates from universities and other institutions or those from other fields of expertise who wish to become an extension officer.

The program will enhance trainees' skills to deliver agricultural and natural resource management projects with landholders in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Catchments, developing expertise in one or more of the following areas: land management, water quality, soil health and conservation, nutrient and pest management, and environmental monitoring.

Trainees will be employed full-time for 15 months (Feb 2025 to May 2026) to assist in delivering extension services through their host organisations, supported by mentoring from experienced advisors and a tailored training program valued at approximately $30k. Trainees will also have the opportunity to build professional and local networks with their fellow trainees, industry advisors, and previous participants as well as in their local communities.

Eight positions are available in eight different host organisations across the GBR catchments. Candidates can select up to 3 top preferences.

To participate in the program, you will need to:

  • Have completed studies in Agriculture, Science or Environment (ideally minimum Certificate IV);
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia; and
  • Hold an open Queensland driver’s license.
  • Be committed to participating in the program for the 15-month period
  • Have a passion for agriculture and/or science
  • Enjoy working outdoors with producers as well as completing administrative tasks
  • Be able to work and travel independently as requested
  • Reside or be willing to relocate to one of the Great Barrier Reef Catchments

Please note, all applications are reviewed individually, and we encourage all applicants to submit an application.
