The Queensland Alliance for Mental Health (QAMH) is the peak body for community mental health and wellbeing in Queensland. Representing over 100 member organisations, we advocate for change, build capacity, and collaborate to improve the Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Sector for all Queenslanders.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director Government Relations to lead QAMH’s government engagement and advocacy efforts. In this senior leadership role, you will work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team to influence policy, strengthen relationships with government and key stakeholders, and ensure QAMH remains a trusted voice in mental health reform. You will also oversee a small team of policy and impact officers to drive policy development and sector advocacy initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement QAMH’s government relations strategy in alignment with our mission and priorities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.
  • Provide expert advice to the CEO and senior leadership team on political and regulatory developments affecting the sector.
  • Lead the development of policy submissions, briefing papers, and advocacy campaigns.
  • Represent QAMH in high-level discussions, roundtables, and public forums.
  • Oversee and mentor a small team, fostering a high-performance culture.

About You

We are looking for a motivated and influential leader with:

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years of experience in government relations, public affairs, or advocacy, preferably in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of political processes, public policy, and legislative frameworks.
  • Proven experience engaging with government, policymakers, and key decision-makers.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong leadership and people management experience.
  • The ability to translate policy insights into actionable advocacy strategies.
