QUT is seeking a community member to join the Biosafety Committee (UBC) to further support the research and teaching activities of the University.

This is a great opportunity to contribute your knowledge and expertise to the world of research at QUT.

The membership of the University Biosafety Committee is constituted in accordance with the requirements of the Gene Technology Act 2000, Gene Technology Regulations 2001 (Cth) and corresponding Queensland legislation.

About UBC

The UBC’s primary responsibility is to ensure, as far as practicable, that potentially hazardous biological research and teaching is conducted under controlled conditions and is carried out in a way that staff and students, the public and the environment are protected.

About the role

Each member of the UBC plays an important role in ensuring that the high-quality teaching and research conducted at QUT is carried out in a safe way. Members are responsible for actively contributing to the functioning of the UBC, for example, through the review of applications, provision of advice, constructive criticism and expert commentary.

About You

As an independent member free from any business or other relationship with QUT who:

  • Ability to interpret legislation and policy.
  • Can assess actual/potential risk.
  • Is familiar with research activities.
  • Can attend the scheduled meetings (x8 per year)
  • Review applications and make recommendations regarding the acceptability of the activities being undertaking at QUT.
  • Maintain confidentiality of the committee’s proceedings
