About our organisation:

Sex Workers Outreach Project, New South Wales (SWOP NSW) is the state’s peer sex worker organisation and has been representing sex workers for over 35 years. SWOP NSW works to sustain low rates of STIs and BBVs, including HIV, and provides sex workers equitable access to health, safety, and human rights and legal and workplace protections.

Job Description:

Position Overview

This role will prepare timely, accurate policy related information and persuasive advice, underpinned by analysis of key reports and research, the lived experiences of sex workers in NSW, contextual awareness and sex worker consultation.

Position Detail

  • Hours per Week: 21 (3 days/week, permanent part time)
  • Classification: SCHADS Award Level 5.1 (Salary Packaging available)
  • Probation: in line with the SCHADS Award
  • Rate of Pay: $47.50 per hour plus superannuation and leave loading
  • Position reports to: SWOP NSW Chief Executive Officer
  • Location: 7/110 Botany Rd, Alexandria, NSW 2015

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop briefing and discussion papers, policy documents, submissions, articles and media releases, as directed.
  • Prepare internal briefs and advice for SWOP NSW on key issues for the NSW sex industry, including to the governance committee.
  • Research, source and analyse information on priority policy issues.
  • Maintain awareness of current NSW laws as they relate to sex workers and awareness of sex work research, reports and campaigns, in order to reference and inform policy development.
  • Analyse, summarise and report on SWOP NSW consultation with NSW sex workers.
  • Represent SWOP NSW in relevant forums, as requested.
  • Ensure accuracy of work and that language and style is matched to the specific output.
  • Work to deadlines, incorporating feedback and approval processes into planning.
  • Work in accordance with relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedure, delegation of authority, contractual requirements, and budgets.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.

Selection Criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Current or previous experience as a sex worker, a thorough understanding of issues impacting on sex workers in NSW, and knowledge of the sex worker rights movement in Australia and internationally.
  • Experience in policy analysis and development OR demonstrated ability to undertake these duties*.
  • Understanding of community consultation approaches to inform policy development.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilise social media and other platforms to access a diverse range of sex work writings, articles, research, and sex worker community campaigns.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to adapt writing style to suit a specific audience.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the capacity to plan and prioritise work within competing deadlines and use initiative to problem solve and achieve outcomes.
  • Strong computer and keyboard skills including word processing, file management, social media, internet and email.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team, and to work independently with minimal direction.
  • A desire and willingness to work with other sex workers, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people who inject drugs, people with disability, trans and gender diverse people, and people living with HIV.

Desirable Criteria

  • An understanding of parliamentary processes.
  • An understanding of the role of the community sector in the Australian response to BBVs and STIs.
