About the Program

The Flying Doctor Dental Clinic works in collaboration with Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) and Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) to provide oral health services to communities in rural Victoria. The Dental team consist of dentists, oral health therapists and dental assistants who travel to rural and remote communities to provide examinations, oral health promotion and treatment services to eligible community members.

About the Role

Working as a Dental Assistant with the Royal Flying Doctor Service will mean that no two days are the same. The Dental Assistant is responsible for the provision of chair-side dental assistance and administration as part of the Flying Doctor Dental Clinic (FDDC).

Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Provide dental assistance to dentists and/or oral health therapists in a mobile or fixed dental clinic
  • Provision of chair side assistance
  • Prepare, maintain and monitor equipment including autoclave, x-ray and ultrasonic machines and the medical fridge
  • Identify and notify appropriate personnel of any equipment problems, including repairs and maintenance of dental chairs, compressors and suction
  • Assist with maintaining stock levels including ordering, replenishing, unpacking, storing and rotating of stock
  • Make and manage appointments for dental patients
  • Assist with promotion of health programs to patients, stakeholders and other relevant parties

To be successful, you will need:

  • Certificate III or IV in Dental Assisting
  • To have the availability to work a one week on and one week off roster
  • To able to drive in both city and country traffic conditions
  • A commitment to excellence in the delivery of patient-focused health care
  • Ability to handle challenging operational situations in a calm and rational manner
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with various stakeholders
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical patient record systems (RFDS uses Titanium) and sound experience in Microsoft Office applications
  • Current CPR (or willing to obtain one)
  • Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.

Mandatory vaccination policy:
