Trauma and Grief Counsellor

Amber Community

About us

Amber Community is a not-for-profit organisation that contributes to the safety and well-being of road users. We provide counselling and support to people affected by road-related trauma and educate road users about their attitudes and behaviours.

We provide free, professional face-to-face, online and telephone counselling across Victoria to people impacted by a road incident. Our clients include bereaved families, friends and colleagues, injured people, and carers. We also support drivers, passengers, people who were first on the scene, witnesses, citizens who helped, and emergency service workers.

Through the active engagement of people who have personal experience of the effects of crashes on their and others' lives, we can offer several support options, including peer support. In addition, we deliver a range of education programs addressing drivers' behaviours and attitudes to reduce the incidence of crashes, injuries, and fatalities and the associated trauma and grief.

About the role

We are expanding our counselling team and seeking up to four casual trauma and grief counsellors to work at least six hours per week each. This initiative is part of a three-month trial designed to reduce wait times for our counselling services, with the goal of making this a long-term program.

As a trauma and grief counsellor at Amber Community, you will be crucial in supporting individuals affected by road trauma through telephone and online counselling—without needing to attend our head office. You will provide information, support, counselling, intake calls, assessments, and referrals to outside organisations. There may also be the opportunity to co-facilitate support groups.

This role requires resilience and professionalism in working with people experiencing significant distress, along with the ability to maintain your well-being while supporting clients through trauma and grief. You will also help drive broader awareness by educating the public and key stakeholders on the emotional impact of road trauma on individuals, families, and communities.

About you

We are looking for qualified, experienced, and compassionate counsellors who are passionate about providing client-centred support and high-quality services. You are comfortable working independently while remaining an engaged and collaborative team member.

Key attributes:

  • Experience in working with individuals affected by trauma and loss
  • A strong theoretical understanding of trauma, traumatic grief, and traumatic bereavement
  • The ability to foster effective therapeutic relationships
  • Resilience and self-awareness to support clients in distressing situations.

If you are ready to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by road trauma, we would love to hear from you!
