The SAIL Program is a completely volunteer-run, non-profit, secular organisation which provides free tutoring and mentoring services to the Sudanese Australian refugee community. At SAIL we are committed to excellence in volunteerism and to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children. Our program consists of a wonderful community that seeks to support each other by building positive relationships centred on a value of education.
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated coordinator to effectively run our Fitzroy campus and support our small team of tutors and students. If you believe you are the right person and have the passion and skills required to take on this important leadership role, we would love to hear from you.
Please note, the students who attend the Fitzroy campus are predominantly primary school aged. Therefore, an interest in early primary education is important.
All applicants must:
- Be over the age of 18 to apply
- Hold a valid Working With Children Check
- Abide by our Child Protection Policy at all times
- Agree to and sign our Code of Conduct
- Attend mandatory induction and training sessions
- Volunteer for a minimum of 12 months
- Have a fluent understanding of the English language
Key responsibilities:
- Organise and run weekly tutoring sessions every Saturday from 10:30am–1:30pm
- Supervise and monitor the safety and welfare of students
- Supervise compliance with Child Protection Policy and report incidents, concerns or breaches
- Support tutors with advice, educational resources and maintaining confidence and morale
- Report to overseeing coordinators weekly on campus activities
- Monitor and respond to email contact to the Fitzroy campus
- Provide inductions and training of all new volunteers
- Assist with organising extra activities such as annual camp, birthday and end of year celebrations
- Maintain resources at campus, including books and stationary, and replenish when required
- Maintain strong relationships with students and their families and provide/seek additional social support where appropriate
- Liaise with community centre staff to maintain relationship, and report any issues immediately to the caretaker

- Strong leadership skills
- Strong social awareness and empathy when dealing with students, families and tutor
