About the role

SA Rainbow Advocacy Alliance is looking for a passionate and skilled Project Officer to lead the delivery of the Rainbow Local Council Network, an initiative that supports South Australian local governments to strengthen engagement and foster greater inclusion of LGBTIQA+ people.

In this role, you will drive systemic change, collaborating with local government leaders to offer expert advice, address challenges, and develop practical strategies, resources, and training to embed best practices in LGBTIQA+ inclusion. You will also oversee the creation of a high-quality, actionable toolkit, empowering councils to foster inclusive cultures.

This role requires a committed and proactive individual who can navigate complex environments, engage stakeholders effectively, and manage competing priorities while achieving tangible, progressive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the Rainbow Local Council Network, driving meaningful inclusion for LGBTIQA+ communities across South Australian local governments.
  • Build and nurture relationships with council members, staff, and community stakeholders to foster collaboration and shared understanding.
  • Provide expert advice practical solutions to support councils in implementing inclusive policies and practices.
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and training sessions to share updates, identify opportunities, and promote best practices.
  • Research, develop, and deliver a comprehensive toolkit with resources to support councils in embedding LGBTIQA+ inclusion.
  • Manage project priorities and deadlines, ensuring the successful and timely delivery of key outcomes.

Who We're looking for

We’re looking for someone with the following skills, attributes and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in LGBTIQA+ inclusion and a deep understanding of challenges faced by LGBTIQA+ communities, as well as broader social justice issues such as cultural diversity, First Nations justice, and disability inclusion.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to take ownership and deliver outcomes effectively.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Facilitation and collaboration skills for leading productive meetings and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Research and analytical capabilities to develop resources and inform policy advice.
  • Advisory and problem-solving expertise to provide tailored guidance to councils.
  • A proactive, organised, and adaptable approach to managing multiple priorities.
  • Experience in community engagement, training facilitation, or advisory roles.
  • Working knowledge of business IT systems including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, social media, and WordPress.
  • Previous experience in local government or the public sector is advantageous but not essential.

Employment conditions

  • Some out-of-hours work and business travel may be required.
  • Employment is subject to a Working With Children Check by the South Australian Department of Human Services.
  • This position is subject to a three-month probationary period.
  • The role will require supporting additional projects, ensuring prioritisation and effective delivery.
