Side By Side Advocacy is starting a leadership group for people with intellectual disability. People with intellectual disability often experience particular barriers to having their voices heard and needs met.

Starting a leadership group is one strategy to assist people to build leadership skills so that they can be more confident to speak up.

The Project Lead will have experience:

  • Working with people with intellectual disability
  • Supporting the learning of people with intellectual disability
  • Public speaking
  • Facilitating groups
  • Co-designing resources to facilitate the learning of people with disability
  • Using Technology - including using Zoom
  • Evaluating projects
  • Preparing reports.

They will have skills:

  • Writing in plain and Easy English
  • Public speaking
  • Engaging with people in civic roles and an understanding of the conventions of those roles and interactions
  • Working independently and as part of a team.

The role will involve:

  • Providing leadership development training
  • Supporting people with intellectual disability to consider, frame and deliver their own story with impact
  • Facilitating the sharing of stories in a safe space
  • Exploring the current knowledge and experience of leadership group members
  • Helping participants consider issues impacting on people with intellectual disability
  • Sharing information about possible leadership roles and pathways
  • Co-designing a coherent set of content to drive leadership meetings
  • Facilitating leadership meetings that include guided discussions, peer learning, workshops and resource sharing
  • Creating resources to assist leadership development
  • Working 1:1 with people with intellectual disability unable to attend meetings or for whom group settings are a barrier to involvement
  • Presenting promotional information sessions
  • Assisting participants to share learnings/insights such as via information sessions and Side By Side Advocacy’s newsletter
  • Facilitating participant engagement with civic leaders
  • Preparing reports about leadership group progress
  • Evaluating project outcomes.

The Project Lead role will also involve working with and supporting a peer mentor to ensure a coherent leadership approach.

It is hoped that one to one engagement will allow for the participation of profoundly isolated people with intellectual disability who often miss out on leadership opportunities.

The role will be based in Parramatta with some travel to engage one to one with individuals.

It is a requirement of this job that you successfully complete a police check and a working with children check prior to commencing work.

The role ends in December 2024.

Remuneration is based on the SCHADS Award, Level 6.

This is a part time role for 7.5 hours per fortnight.

The Project Lead reports to the Executive Officer.
