Consultant - Guidelines on Best Practice Sex Worker Research

Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association

ORGANISATION DESCRIPTION

Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association, is the national peak body representing sex workers and sex worker organisations, projects, groups, and networks.

Scarlet Alliance’s mission statement is to, through its objectives, policies and programs, work to advance Sex Worker Rights with the achievement of equality and social, legal, political, cultural health and economic justice for past and present workers in the sex industry to enable sex workers to be self-determining agents, build our own alliances and choose where and how we live and work.

Scarlet Alliance is seeking to appoint a Consultant to lead the development of Guidelines on best practice sex worker research. Scarlet Alliance will consider applications from sex workers based in Australia.

THE POSITION

The Consultant will be required to develop and implement comprehensive consultation mechanisms for Scarlet Alliance members and sex workers, and identify key stakeholders with expertise in sex worker community-led research with the goal of developing best practice guidelines for ethical sex worker research.

This position is made possible through a bequest made to Scarlet Alliance by academic, researcher, author, and trans and sex worker rights activist Roberta Perkins. Consultation with Scarlet Alliance members identified the need for guidelines in order for members and sex workers to direct, engage in, and conduct ethical sex worker participatory research.

The Guidelines are intended as a tool for sex worker and non-sex worker researchers to conduct ethical research; as a tool for Scarlet Alliance members to engage with researchers; and as a guide for sex workers to understand how to make choices about participating in research.

The Consultant will lead this work, including overseeing the Scarlet Alliance method for conducting consultations among its members, key stakeholders and researchers with community expertise. The work will require a combination of strong interpersonal, research and writing skills.

To plan and deliver on this work the successful applicant will need to work closely with the Chief Executive Officer. This is an interesting and challenging position that requires a high degree of autonomy and initiative and the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
