ORGANISATION DESCRIPTION

Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association, is the national peak body representing sex workers and sex worker organisations, projects, groups, and networks.

Scarlet Alliance’s mission statement is to, through its objectives, policies and programs, work to advance Sex Worker Rights with the achievement of equality and social, legal, political, cultural health and economic justice for past and present workers in the sex industry to enable sex workers to be self-determining agents, build our own alliances and choose where and how we live and work.

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

This position will report directly to the Scarlet Alliance Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is not responsible for supervising any staff. This position will at times work with and delegate to the Policy Officer, who is supervised by the National Programs Manager.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

This position will be responsible for effectively and efficiently supporting the CEO and membership in policy and advocacy activities for the organisation in line with the organisation’s strategic direction, core values, vision, and mission statement. This position is about creating change to advance sex worker rights through equality and social, legal, political, cultural, health and economic justice for past and present workers in the sex industry. The position holder will be required to comprehensively understand the nuances of legislation and policy as it affects sex workers, and the role of different levels of government in influencing public policy decision making in Australia.

THE Policy and Advocacy Manager WILL:

  • Keep up to date on developments nationally and internationally that affect sex workers to ensure Scarlet Alliance remains at the forefront of knowledge and practice.
  • Develop and write briefing papers, discussion papers, policy documents, submissions, articles, and media releases.
  • Update and maintain The Principles for Model Sex Work Legislation.
  • Provide timely advice to CEO and member organisations, including media response.
  • Lead the research, conceptualisation and preparation of policy positions and organisational responses to government processes.
  • Cultivate networks of stakeholders, including from Scarlet Alliance’s members, who can support Scarlet Alliance’s analysis and response to issues.
  • Research and analyse priority policy issues for sex workers in Australia and promote policy development that is evidence based and in line with Scarlet Alliance aims and objectives.
  • Maintain an understanding of government processes to inform effective advocacy.

POSITION LOCATION

This position is open to applicants anywhere in unceded Australia. The post holder is welcome to work from the Scarlet Alliance office on Gadigal Land (Newtown, NSW).

SALARY & CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

This position is offered on an initial maximum term contract to 30 June 2024 (start date in March or April 2023), and is subject to ongoing funding or organisational change.

This is a part-time position at 0.8 FTE (30 hours/week, 4 days/week) paid at the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 Level 6, ($49.07 per hour, pro rata $96,969.60 per annum) and subject to the National Employment Standards.
