Communications Officer

Job purpose:

Working closely with the Director of Communications, this position will deliver outstanding communications work across a range of programs delivered by Science & Technology Australia (STA). This key role is responsible for the delivery of strategic communications and marketing, including for the National Industry PhD Program and across STA’s social media platforms.

The role holder will work towards engaging and amplifying the voice of STA’s membership and raising the organisation’s profile across key science and research events.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver and report on a marketing and communications strategy for the National Industry PhD Program.
  • Target key audiences and utilise tools for effective marketing, communications and outreach to maximise the success of STA programs and build a strong positive profile.
  • Develop communications, design and marketing materials across a range of STA programs.
  • Lead STA’s social media engagement, including researching, drafting, and posting multimedia content across various platforms.
  • Support media engagement and pitching to promote STA’s programs and broader STA communications opportunities.
  • Manage and maintain STA’s website, including posting new content and providing advice on ways to modernise STA’s web presence.
  • Work closely with STA’s Directors of Membership and Policy to identify and leverage opportunities to engage with our membership and wider sector.
  • Other duties as required.

Essential skills:

  • High level skills in communications strategy development, content creation and writing - with a strong sense of initiative, proactivity and innovation.
  • Excellence and proven skills in social media communication, enhancing reach and amplification of messaging for impact across various channels.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including an ability to establish effective and trusted relationships with strong confidentiality, courtesy and formality as appropriate.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of the role.
  • Strong initiative, good judgement and highly organised, with great time management skills and an ability to juggle competing priorities and respond quickly and professionally.
  • Demonstrated skills in key communications tools and the aptitude and drive to research and learn new products and platforms to continue to broaden this skillset.
  • Design experience across a range of platforms including Canva, InDesign and WordPress will be highly regarded.
  • A passion for the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sector and a deep commitment to diversity, fairness, inclusion and equity.
