Science & Technology Australia is expanding and enhancing our renowned Superstars of STEM program, with a focus on increasing cultural capability and reaching Indigenous communities. If you have a passion for science, technology, and communications, and are eager to learn and grow in the media space, this role is for you.

About the role:

We’re looking for a proactive and enthusiastic individual who is excited to help share the incredible stories of the Superstars of STEM program.

In this role, you will work closely with the Program Manager and the Director of Communications to help identify and develop media opportunities for the program. You’ll assist in building relationships with media outlets and support the promotion of the program to a wider audience, with a particular focus on Indigenous and rural/remote communities. You will also help organise media training for program participants and ensure that the program runs smoothly.

This is a fantastic opportunity to grow in your career in communications, particularly within the diversity and STEM sectors. You will be joining a small inclusive team with a genuine passion for both improving diversity in the STEM workforce and for elevating Indigenous knowledges.

This is a part-time role (0.6-0.8FTE) based in our Canberra office.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with story identification: Help identify interesting and relevant stories within the Superstars of STEM program to promote to the media.
  • Media outreach support: Help build and maintain relationships with media outlets, particularly those focusing on Indigenous and rural communities. Assist with reaching out to journalists and media contacts.
  • Media training support: Support media training for program participants and help them prepare for interviews and media appearances.
  • Administrative assistance: assist with program coordination, tracking media and social media coverage and contributing to program evaluation.
  • Program Promotion: Assist in creating communications materials, such as media releases, social media posts, and other content to help promote the Superstars of STEM program.

Selection criteria:

  • Strong communication skills: A passion for writing and storytelling, with experience of and an interest in learning how to craft engaging media materials.
  • Media Interest: A strong interest in working with media, and the ability to build relationships with journalists and outlets.
  • Cultural capability: A passion for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a commitment to promoting cultural inclusivity.
  • Organisational skills: Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and stay organised, even in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for STEM and diversity: A genuine commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the STEM sector and promoting STEM careers to under-represented groups.
