The Family Care and Support program provides temporary supported accommodation and Immediate Housing Response (IHR) for families as well as Centre-based and Mobile Support case management to people who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness.
- Monday to Friday day roster, no weekend or on-call expectations.
- The fixed term role is funded on a FY basis but is expected to renew yearly until the State housing/homelessness crisis is addressed.

The Housing Support Worker facilitates all case management, operational and administrative requirements of the Family Care and Support program, which include Centre-based, Mobile Support and Supported Accommodation. Playing a significant role as the ‘face’ of the Family Care and Support Program this role is the primary contact for clients, families and the community experiencing housing/homelessness issues. Case management and networking are significant tasks required within this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the intake and case management of Centre-based, Mobile Support and Supported Accommodation clients, which includes assisting with housing walk-in enquiries and phone referrals.
- Attend Housing Hubs, alongside other services in the Brisbane/Redlands LGAs to provide Mobile Support.
- Ensure compliance with and provide information on the housing system & the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008.
- Assess client needs and accept appropriate Supported Accommodation referrals, in consultation with the Family Care and Support Team Leader/Community Programs Manager.
- Case manage family and individual clients to develop and enhance social, living and problem solving skills. Provide follow up support for families when they have transitioned from Family Care and Support Supported Accommodation to other community accommodation.
- Contribute as an effective and flexible team member by participating in team meetings, planning, workshops and collaborative problem solving with other workers as requested.
- Liaise with external agencies in relation to matters such as the nurturing of positive relationships that facilitates community awareness of Silky Oaks.
- Ensure case notes, reports and statistics are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Complete reports required by funding body and other administrative tasks as requested.
About You
To be successful in the position, you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in social or behavioural sciences e.g. social work, or other relevant profession or extensive housing/homelessness sector experience
- Minimum two years’ experience working with disadvantaged clients with high needs and multiple issues.
- Experience in crisis work, case management and family support work
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 and the Child Protection Reform Amendment Act 2014
- Demonstrated knowledge of interventions for homeless individuals, families and child protection issues
- Experience working with client groups that are disadvantaged, including those with significant domestic and family violence issues, drug and alcohol abuse, and physical and mental health concerns.
- Demonstrated case work skills, including assessment, referral, advocacy and experience in providing practical support i.e. living skills.
- Highly development interpersonal communication and negotiation skills, and the capacity to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of people and agencies
- Demonstrated ability to assist client groups by accessing appropriate community resources and agencies e.g. Legal Aid, Centrelink, and Department of Housing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including communication with families and children, networking with both internal and external stakeholders, case notes and report writing.
