Owned by St John of God Health Care, St John of God Social Outreach provides significant care and relief for people experiencing disadvantage throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region, particularly in areas where gaps within health and wellbeing services are identified. Social Outreach services are available to all members of the community and are accessible free of charge or at minimal cost.

SJOG Horizon House Young Mother and Baby Program provides accommodation, holistic care, and intensive support to pregnant young women aged 16 to 22 years who are vulnerable and homeless or at risk of homelessness. Horizon House provides support to residents during pregnancy, preparing for the birth of their child, post-natal follow up, developing their independent living skills and assisting their transition to independent living.

The Position

We are currently seeking empathetic and reliable Youth Residential Carers to join our friendly and committed team in the Young Mother and Baby Program at our Horizon House (Bendigo) on a part-time permanent basis.

Our Youth Residential Carer’s YMBP work in a residential care setting to provide intensive support for young women during pregnancy and as young mothers who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This includes working collaboratively with many external services that support young women, as well as coordinating, developing and implementing Independent Life Skills Programs, in order to meet their individualised needs throughout their stay at Horizon House.

It is essential to hold a minimum Certificate IV in Youth Work, Social Sciences, Community Services or similar or have extensive experience working with at risk young people in order to be considered for this position.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Ability to work within and contribute to the Mission and Values of St John of God Health Care
  • Minimum Certificate IV in Youth Work or similar and/or extensive experience in an area related to youth work and/or case management are essential.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the special needs of adolescents and trauma-informed care together with at least five years recent relevant experience working with at-risk young people is essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Privacy Legislation and Occupational, Health & Safety Act Regulations.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Adhere to pre-employment immunisation policy and possession of a current:
    • Unrestricted State Driver’s License
    • First Aid Certificate
    • State Working with Children Card

Desirable requirements

  • A sound knowledge of the stage of physical, emotional, cognitive, social and cultural development of young people.
  • A sound knowledge of working with challenging behaviours and demonstrated skills in conflict resolution with young people.
  • Previous experience working with young mothers and/or infants/young children.
  • Good knowledge of the stages of pregnancy and stages of development and needs of infants.
  • A Diploma or Degree in Youth Work or similar.
