Where you'll be working   

The Social Worker New Graduate position is based in our inpatient Social Work Department at Canterbury Hospital. The Social Work Department at Canterbury Hospital is a team of 7 Social Workers providing a high standard of care to patients, families and carers under the care of Geriatric Medicine, Orthopaedic Medicine, General Medicine, Antenatal, Maternity, Paediatrics and Emergency Medicine.

What you'll be doing

The Social Worker Level New Graduate position is responsible for the provision of Social Work services to patients, families and carers, who are under the care of the inpatient teams of Geriatric Medicine, Orthopaedic Medicine and General Medicine. This is a rotational position, rotating every 6 months between General Medicine and Geriatrics and Orthopaedics.

There are also frequent opportunities to broaden your skill development through coverage of, and shadowing within, Emergency Medicine, Violence, Abuse and Neglect, Paediatric Medicine and Women’s and Babies.

The Social Worker New Graduate will have access to frequent informal supervision from more senior staff members, and may require direct professional support when performing novel, complex, or critical tasks.

The Social Worker New Graduate will participate in quality improvement activities, departmental committees and may be required to participate in clinical research activities.

The ideal candidate

  • Must hold a Bachelor or post graduate degree in Social Work that provides eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and clinical experience in Social Work clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse problems, set priorities and apply a range of options to develop solutions.
  • It is a condition of employment that all Social Workers in the Social Work Department participate in the afterhours on call roster, which provides after hours Social Work support to the hospital 24/7. Afterhours training will be provided.
