The Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) is a community-based organisation dedicated to legal and social justice and the protection of human rights in the Northern Territory. Since 1991, DCLS has provided free legal assistance, support, and advocacy for people facing disadvantage. Their services, covering areas such as tenancy, seniors' rights, and general civil legal matters, enables DCLS to provide integrated support to their clients across Darwin, the Top End, and throughout the Territory.

DCLS works tirelessly to raise awareness and foster understanding, empowering diverse communities to access essential legal services. Through advocacy and collaboration, they are a force for change, championing fairness and justice.

Your Impact

You will be responsible for providing legal assistance to clients in general civil matters across social security, employment, credit and debt, NDIS, adult guardianship, and discrimination. Specifically, you will:

  • Maintain a caseload of complex legal matters
  • Conduct litigation files and participate in dispute resolution
  • Coordinate and deliver legal education, information and outreach services to the community
  • Assist and contribute to law reform and funding submissions
  • Develop and nurture a wide range of stakeholder relationships to deliver outreach services and support referral pathways

What you bring

You are a lawyer who is committed to social justice and human rights with relevant experience working in the legal assistance sector or in a law firm. You are empathetic in nature and can communicate information in a sensitive manner when dealing with diverse clients who have disabilities and are from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.You also have:

  • A practicing certificate in Northern Territory or are willing to obtain one
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A naturally collaborative style and can work well in a team and autonomously
  • Strong time management and organisational skills
  • Highly effective stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills; an ability to build trust and collaboration with a cross section of the community and sector partners
  • A current driver’s licence and a Northern Territory Ochre Card (or willing to obtain one)
