OVERVIEW:
The Social Outfit is a charity that uses a social enterprise model to provide employment and training to people from refugee and new migrant backgrounds. The Social Outfit opened its retail store and sewing studio in June 2014 in Newtown, NSW.
The objectives of The Social Outfit are to:
- Develop the skills and talents of people from refugee backgrounds;
- Develop educational goals and employment opportunities for people from refugee backgrounds;
- Promote, showcase and celebrate Sydney’s diverse refugee communities;
- Provide an inclusive and safe space for people from diverse backgrounds to come together; and
- Promote and showcase environmentally conscious fashion and design, thereby promoting sustainability and ethical consumption.
ROLE:
Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day operations of The Social Outfit’s retail and online stores. You will drive the achievement of The Social Outfit sales targets and shape the online and on-site retail experience to increase and maximise TSO sales. You will support The Social Outfit’s marketing activities, both in store and online. You will also mentor and train junior retail staff. This is a great opportunity to be engaged in an ethical social enterprise contributing to strengthening social cohesion and empowering new migrants and refugees. The role is based in The Social’s Outfit Newtown store, where you will be interacting with our passionate, friendly team and the community we support on a daily basis. It will suit an experienced (online) retail manager who is able to think out of the box, problem solve and work well in a small team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage The Social Outfit retail store, including our Newtown flagship site and online store.
- Manage and maintain updated TSO’s Vend and Shopify platforms at all times, along with the TSO website.
- Manage and secure The Social Outfit’s presence in other retail outlets such as The Iconic and local markets.
- Mentor junior retail staff and trainees.
- Manage buying for TSO, including monitoring stock levels, managing the merchandising budget and researching new supplier opportunities.
- Work in the store, at least two days each week (possibly one weekend day), to gain invaluable insights from customers and help achieve the sales targets.
- Ensure all online and in-store orders are handled in a professional and timely manner.
- Collate financial sales figures and ensure accuracy across all platforms.
- Support the planning and development of new collections by providing sales data and customer feedback to the Manufacturing Manager.
- Coordinate new collection launches, including planning and overseeing photoshoots and other in-store events.
- Lead the team to ensure the retail working environment is kept clean, in order and appealing to customers.
- Lead and maintain all stock control.
- Ensure compliance with all TSO policies and procedures including those relating to health and safety.
- Carry out any other reasonable request by the CEO, and other senior staff.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Essential
- Demonstrated track record of delivering strong retail sales and meeting sales targets.
- Experience in building brand awareness and repeat customers both in store and across social media.
- Solid experience with Shopify and Vend or other similar point-of-sale and retail management software.
- Demonstrated writing and creative skills for websites and the production of marketing collateral.
- Experience in stock management, tracking sales and financial transactions.
- Strong organisation skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Capacity and willingness to guide and mentor junior staff.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work at least two days each week day from our Newtown store.
- Passion for the mission of The Social Outfit and our community along with an interest in ethical fashion and/or social enterprise.

- Design skills using InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
- Digital advertising skills (Google Ads Grant etc.)
- Driver’s licence
