Speak Out is a state-wide advocacy organisation that works together with people with disability about rights. We want an energetic, keen Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander person to join our dynamic team. The position is based in Burnie, NW Tasmania.

The position is classified as Social and Community Service Employee under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. Pay level 4 or 5 depending on experience and qualifications.

This is a full time fixed term position that will end 1 July 2026 with a 6-month probationary period.

Individual Advocacy work

Through advocacy we stand alongside you to make sure your voice is heard; you are treated fairly and have the help you need to make decisions.

Individual advocacy is issues-based. The Indigenous Community Disability Advocate provides information, options and referral so people can make informed decisions about what they want to do. The Community Disability Advocate is directed by the client and/or their family/carer, to get the outcome the client wants through an Advocacy Agreement.

The Community Disability Advocate will also:

  • Deliver education/awareness raising sessions about disability advocacy
  • Use a trauma-informed approach to plan together
  • Refer people to other agencies as required.

Skills and Experience

You already have these or can gain them:

  • Understanding of human rights and disability
  • Can communicate in ways that suit the individual / people / groups
  • A broad knowledge of community services
  • Can develop and maintain networks
  • Ability to problem-solve
  • Computer skills in Office 365 – Outlook, Powerpoint, Word
  • Can travel within the state and stay overnight if needed.

It is desirable if you have:

  • Experience in the Community Service sector
  • A tertiary qualification, Diploma, Certificate IV or vocational training that is relevant to community services
  • A current driver’s license.

All staff employed at Speak Out must complete a Working with Vulnerable People check and Police Check. If you don’t already have these, Speak Out will pay for them.
